Re: Cotton Bowl/SMUCheck here and see if this helps you out any.
www.smumustangs.com/football/history/history.asp SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Cotton Bowl/SMUSMU has played in 4 Cotton Bowls. In addition to the two mentioned above, SMU tied Penn State 13-13 in 1948 and lost to Georgia 24-9 in 1966. The ponies 1st bowl appearance was the 1936 Rose Bowl, where we lost to Stanford 7-0. We played in two Sun Bowl games, losing 21-14 to Oregon in 1963 and 28-7 to Alabama in 1983. On a brighter note in SMU football history, we defeated Oklahoma 28-27 in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl and beat Notre Dame 27-20 in the 1984 Aloha Bowl. Finally, how can anyone forget (ESPN Classics wont let us) the heartbreaking 46-45 loss to BYU in the 1980 Holiday Bowl. All-time record in bowl games is 4-5-1. I'd say we are way overdue for another appearance...somewhere!
Re: Cotton Bowl/SMUhow could our first bowl apperance be in 1936 when we won the National Title in 1935?

Re: Cotton Bowl/SMUOOOO ok! my bad! Dont we just have to get in the top 3 of the WAC and we go to a Bowl Game?

Re: Cotton Bowl/SMUMaybe, but not neccessarily. The WAC has 3 bowl bids, but only the conference champion is guaranteed a bid to the Humanitarian Bowl. The other 2 bowl games are on the west coast, and they can select any bowl eligible WAC team they want. Becuase of geography and the ssize and travel habits of our respective fan bases, those west coast bowls would strongly prefer to have Hawaii or Fresno State if those teams are eligible, rather than SMU.
