So he's a glorified consultant? We had plenty of those on the last staff. Either this guy calls the defense or it's a waste of a spot (unless he plans to be incredibly active on the recruiting trail at age 68).

Waste of a spot?!?!?!? Does the NCAA put a limit on staff size?

I like having an experienced 'hand' to mix in with the youth of our staff. Also gotta think he has some strong national recruiting ties with a pedigree like he possesses.

Seriously? Guy has a resume as a D Coordinator for many of the top programs in the country! Has more experience than 3/4 of our staff combined. Another great hire if he can work well with Malone and act as a mentor. Only question is, does he have familiarity with the 4-2-5 scheme if that is indeed what we're running?

Could just be in a consultant's role as allowed under NCAA rules authorizing expanded non-game day football staff . I think its a great idea to give Malone some technical help in setting up the Defensive system. Basic technical assistance in planning, implementing and establishing the defensive scheme.

The NCAA limits staff sizes. Everything has limits: # of assistants, number of GA's, etc...

Yes seriously, he either needs to be the actual DC or his expertise needs to be used in some other role that doesn't use up one of the nine.

You can hire as many Consultant's as you want to pay for-they just aren't designated members of Coaching staff-they can't recruit, call plays etc. I doubt if this guy has any interest in recruiting anyway. I was reading up on him before this was announced. He just got bored so he took the Yukon job. He wants to be involved -I think a consultants role fits perfectly with what we need in this case. A steady, experienced hand that knows how to implement a defense

Maybe we should wait until his role is announced before whining about it. Just a thought.

Why? We have plenty of young, aggressive guys out recruiting.

When Malone is in charge of the game planning for the first time in his career, having a guy like Young around to bounce ideas off is smart.

Look. Everyone agrees that June and his staff were terrible recruiters. But, that doesn't mean that we need to replace them with people based only upon their ability to recruit. On a staff with a number of guys stepping up from Grad Assistant/lower level assistant jobs, it would be idiotic not to hire at least one guy with "big time" experience.

Think about it this way: When the TCU/Baylor offenses are coming to town, is Malone going to be ready to outcoach Briles and Cumbie without any help? No.

Saban is a defensive mastermind. Part of that is knowing enough to surround himself with experienced coaches: http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-footbl ... 50183.html. Their special teams coordinators is in his 50's. Baylor's former head coach guy is a lower level assistant: "Steele spent three years (2009-11) as the defensive coordinator at Clemson. The Tigers won the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, which was their first league title since 1991. The 2010 defense led the ACC and ranked 13th nationally in points allowed, surrendering 18.8 points per game. Clemson claimed the Atlantic Division Championship in 2009. Prior to Clemson and Alabama, Steele worked at Florida State under head coach Bobby Bowden for four seasons (2003-06) as the executive head coach. He was named the Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year in 2005 at FSU after helping the Seminoles sign the top class in the country. Steele came to Florida State after serving as the head coach at Baylor University from 1999-2002. "

His "big time" experience can help Malone just as well in a role outside the nine.

I would guess he is a consultant because we don't have anyone on the staff yet who is an LB coach, and he doesn't have the history of that either.
