Seagoville teammates pick A&M

07:11 PM CDT on Monday, October 17, 2005

By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News

Donald Sloan and Derrick Roland are said to be like brothers.

"If you see one, you see the other," Seagoville coach Robert Allen said.

It should be that way for years to come. The Seagoville senior guards said they orally committed Monday morning to play basketball at Texas A&M.

Sloan and Roland visited A&M this weekend. A&M is the only school that offered scholarships to both players.

"We did want to play together," Sloan said. "They made me feel like I was already part of the team."

Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day basketball players can sign a national letter of intent is Nov. 9.

Sloan and Roland said they attended the season-opening practice Friday and liked the Aggies' up-tempo style. Seagoville, a Class 4A Region II finalist the last two seasons, plays in similar fashion.

"They worked harder than any team I've seen," Roland said.

Sloan, a 6-3 first-team all-area selection who averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists as a junior, said he picked A&M over Oklahoma and SMU. Roland, a 6-5 second-team all-area pick who averaged 20 points and four rebounds, said he picked the Aggies over UNLV and Arizona State.

Sloan, ranked No. 17 in the state by Rivals.com, and Roland, ranked No. 9, join a recruiting class that already includes Plano's 6-6 Joseph Fulce and Lincoln's 6-8 Gary Flowers, who is attending prep school this year.

Grand Prairie's 6-9 Bryan Davis also visited A&M during the weekend.

Tubbs is getting his you know what kicked in recruiting. Tubbs' reputation as being a good recruiter (especially in the D/FW area) is sure taking a hit. Things do not look good for SMU basketball when we cannot land a single top rated local recruit. SMU athletics is in a downward spiral.

Arthur is North Carolina bound - if they'll take him.

Sloan and Roland to aggieville might have a silver lining. Roland and Joe Fulce will most likely be fighting for the same spot. Roland is a little more polished but Fulce has the bigger upside imo. Let's hope Tubbs restarts dialogue with Joe and gets him thinking about immediate playing time. He should also think about bringing Joe's 6'8" teammate Eric Zastopil to the hilltop, too.

I'm assuming there were academic issues with Roland since we didn't offer?

not surprising, that had been rumored for awhile. However, no one can deny things arent looking all that good for hoops recruiting right now. We went after some elite players, got seriously considered and came up short. I hope it tells us we better get Moody fixed up and a practice gym in a hurry. I'm not holding my breath though. Most people will blame Tubbs, which I think is mistaken.

That is unfortunate, I agree. I suspect the only reason we were "seriously considered" by the top prospects who looked at us was Tubbs.

Looked at S&S and SN magazines this weekend.

S&S had us projected #8 in C-USA, SN had us at #10. We also had the #8 ranked recruiting class per S&S.

Well, then I will chime in with a condescending remark. I can't wait until Tulsa and SMU play. I wonder if Doug Wojcik can coach. Copeland apparently didn't think so.

After all the suffering and disappiontment, to the point where I have no expectations of winning anymore, I still care about SMU athletics. I guarantee you I need my head examined.

Sounds as if you think Tubbs CAN'T. I'd like to know why.
