I am not hoping the Big 12 stays at 10, I am just objective enough to voice an opinion
about how flawed the other p5 rules are as it relates to Champions and such.

but I hope somehow these rules help us in the long run.

and definitely agree with previous three posts above. ^^

I can see something like this happening:

1) Playoff expands within 2-4 years to 8 teams to get more of that sweet, sweet $$$. Any more than 8 presumably creates academic/scheduling issues. Now, while doom-and-gloomers predict the P5 collapsing into the P4, I see all P5 conferences surviving.

2) All P5 conference champions get an auto-bid, the best of the G5 (AAC or MWC) gets an auto-bid, and we're left with 2 at-large bids.

3a) All P5 conferences expand to 14 or 16 schools to capitalize on $$$ (by increasing market penetration and knocking out "competition" from the best of the G5) and, in the case of the Big 12, have a a better chance at securing an at-large bid through a championship game. Even if it's just an expansion to 14, that's 2 teams for the Pac-12 and 4 for the Big-12...

OR

3b) Very limited expansion occurs. The best of the AAC and MWC decide to form a new conference to ensure that they get that "G5" spot every year:

Air Force
BYU
Boise
Cincinnati
ECU
Houston
Memphis
Navy
SDSU
SMU
UConn
UCF
USF
& 1-3 from: Temple, Tulane, UNLV, CSU

This is why the Big 12 needs a Championship

Still hard to believe that a G5 team is always "worthy" of getting an invite. Are any of the 3 loss teams in the AAC or even a 2 loss Boise team (who lost to the only P5 team they played) truly worthy to be amongst the top 8?

You mean "G5" not P5, right?

I would guess if they go 8 teams, it would be P5 Champs plus at large with no G5 guarantee, but an opportunity to
be invited. Problems then will arise with conference Championship game losers getting the shaft and having lower tier
teams jump them after they lose that game. Oh well, someone will always have a beef...

I think the main reason we've moved to a CFB playoff is the potential for more cash. The guy who wrote "Death to the BCS" said a CFB playoff could generate something like $400 million in revenue. So, what's the best model to look to? The NCAA basketball playoff which nets a good deal of $$$ and gets a -lot- of attention. One big reason why it gets so many views? The Cinderella upsets. I see the CFB playoff adding in one G5 auto-bid to 1) get that Cinderella factor and 2) calm down the people who are always threatening a lawsuit.

Oh I agree GreenbeltPony, going to 8 and giving the have nots an opportunity gives
the g5ers a glimmer of hope, would be good for college football's "have nots", which are
many.

8 teams might dilute the regular season a bit for the top tier, but I have
definitely come around on 8 teams. It will be a good thing for all college
athletic programs.

We are in the G5 have nots PonyKris...
That berth would be in our best interest and would probably be one of the factors that gets us to grow our fanbase and keep HCCM for a long long time.

I agree that an 8 team playoff that at least gives the best team among the G5 an opportunity is the best we can hope for right now. If Chad Morris can build this football program to the level that TCU has built theirs, we might eventually earn our way back into the Big XII, but this current 4 team playoff leaves the P5 disappointed so it's destined to fail

no "auto-bid" for G5 but you should let one in if that team is ranked higher than any of the P5 conference champions

If they go to 8 my bet is there would be an auto G5 spot to avoid any monopoly type furor. That could be the final straw to bring a lawsuit. I am not saying it is right but 8 would at least give room for them to throw the G5 a bone.

I think the "rule" for BCS game eligibility was to finish among the top 12 (when there were 8 spots) so I have no problem with earning a spot

I could understand a ranking requirement. Only problem is now that they have gone back to human ranking from computer, they could manipulate a little too easily it would seem.

Best case scenario for us would be if the big 12 breaks up, and a few of the teams end up in the AAC. I love, or at least used to before UT ruined it, the big 12. But if ut and OU leave and take tech and OSU with them, the leftovers would be a great addition to our conference. Then add Boise state and a few more to get to 18, and we could have a strong conference
