I welcome thoughts on the (final) CFP spot

Postby michiganstang » Sun Dec 07, 2014 1:45 am

Though I have been a member of this site for a long time, I rarely post (and have never started a thread prior to today), preferring to absorb the opinions and information of the regular posters here. That said I am deeply bothered by what may happen with the playoff selection and felt like venting (and no, it is not in the slightest because TCU is involved).

I do not think I can accept the argument for putting TCU into the (presumably one) open playoff spot. The argument seems to be that one can ignore their head to head loss to Baylor because TCU's out of conference schedule was better.

Their best OOC win was against Minnesota; if one accepts that a victory over an unranked, middle of the pack Big Ten team trumps Baylor's head to head victory, than I believe the final playoff spot should go to another one loss team that just ran roughshod over that conference - Ohio State.

If one declares that Ohio State's loss was to a weak team (true) and argues that the Big Ten is down therefore dominating it is not as impressive as TCU having a share of the Big 12 title, then it seems the Minnesota victory should not be accepted as trumping Baylor's head to head victory.

In short, I believe the final spot should go to Baylor or Ohio State (though am perfectly prepared to be amazed by the committee's choice to choose TCU).

I welcome any ideas that help me see the other side more clearly, but frankly, I find it deeply distasteful that this decision could so boldly subvert on the field results.

I think there are a few arguments in favor of TCU:

1) No bad loss. (Baylor's loss to West Virginia is a bad loss.)
2) Better out of conference schedule. (Minnesota isn't exactly top tier, but is undoubtedly better than Baylor's OOC opponents.)
3) Head-to-head loss to Baylor occurred by a very narrow margin on Baylor's home field. (Implying it would likely have gone the other way on TCU's home field.)

TCU would be my choice, but I'd be an idiot if I didn't acknowledge that Baylor has an incredibly good argument as well.

That said, I think Ohio State is gonna grab the last spot. That's a totally different argument though.

It may come down to simple numbers: Ohio St. played 1 more game than TCU and Baylor (and dominated).

I welcome thoughts on the (final) CFP spot

If there was ever and argument to go to 8 teams then this is it. Oregon and Bama clearly deserve a spot and are in perceived better conferences. OSU and FSU supposedly played nobody and barely one the games while both being in perceived weaker conference. Then there is the BU and TCU, so sorry TCU but BU beat you, period.

If it was about perceived strength then I think both BU and TCU trump and make up the 3rd and 4th spots. With that said I think curse of the Texas/private/religious comes into play and they both get left out. FSU and OSU are in. Conspiracy theory of brand names bringing fans, money, etc.

1) Bama
2) Oregon
3) FSU (I don't think they deserve to be in here, but still, they're undefeated)
4) TCU

5) OSU
6) Baylor

will defend FSU for having played a tougher schedule than anyone seems to be giving them credit for...and last time I checked, they won every game they played. Conference wins against Clemson, Louisville and Ga Tech (all good teams) and non-conference wins against Okie State, Notre Dame and Florida. Argument can be made that TCU and Baylor played the weak schedule as traditional powers Texas and OU weren't very good this year. I think it ends up like this:

1) Bama
2) Oregon
3) FSU
4) Ohio St
5)Baylor
6)TCU

Baylor and TCU will play in BCS games and have an opportunity to show just how strong (or not) the Big XII was this year. One of them should get Michigan State? Hopefully the other gets a SEC team

I think Ohio State gets it and I think they should. But I am glad the whole thing is a disaster.

Agreed. Ohio State also has the toughest strength of schedule of 4-6. Big 12 better get rid of their 'One True Champion' slogan or play a championship game. Only have themselves to blame.

There will never be satisfaction with 4 teams chosen by a subjective committee. It needs to be conference champions or at least go to 8 teams
