That's fair, but we'll have to agree to disagree. To be clear, I'm not saying we shouldn't have been there because they/we lost 11 games, I'm saying I wasn't about to celebrate a season full of quit. The next season starts today.

Down two touchdowns in cold rain in front of nobody on the road after losing all your other games, they fought back to win. And they were coached by a crew who stuck with them through the season, when it might have been smarter to bail and start a job search without 10 fresh losses.

I'd say that is worthy of my respect, even as disappointed as we all are by this season and where the lack of recruiting focus left us.

We are not agreeing to disagree. This is one on which I can see both sides and have no argument either way. You did preface by saying parents and former players aside. I am a former player and I never quit at any time in any game in any season. I refuse to believe the players ever quit. I believe they were deserted, poorly coached, depressed, misguided, and not an inspired team. But I do not believe they quit. But again, I was not there and I equally respect your opinion and definitely agree it is time to turn the page and look ahead.

Welcome the team back

It is kind of odd to celebrate one win. Dont get it. Im glad we didnt go 0-12 and they fought for the win. USF should have been a W. Good luck Seniors and on to the next chapter.

I get where Cox is coming from & he said it in a tasteful manner.

I view all this sentimentality towards our coaching staff the same way you view an under productive employee whose about the leave your company. Maybe they get a cake, certainly lots of pats on the back and some good war stories, but the truth be told, the moment they leave, they are quickly forgotten and for good reason.

This ^^^ Nice thoughts Mrydel as I agree the team didn't really 'quit' per se. But they were lost at sea and they collectively pulled it out yesterday against all odds because as we all know too well, losing teams always find a way to lose, but these guys turned a corner and gutted it out. Kudo's to them and hopefully bodes well for the next regime.

If i were a current player and got the band and fans after going 1-11, i might see it as patronizing....participation trophy.

CoxMustangFan wrote:I didn't want to respond on this topic without sleeping on it, and I'm sure I would feel differently if I was the parent of a player or a former player. All that said, I was a bit surprised when I received this email. This team is full of players that are a part of JJ's miserable recruiting efforts. It has been clear that most quit about the same time as Jones. Zero fire. Zero on the field passion for defending the reputation of our school.

While I'm happy that the team won yesterday, avoiding a 0- season isn't cause for a party. I don't feel like parting or giving Mason a giant [deleted] for doing his job, and doing it poorly. Time for all current players, future players, past players, current students, alumni, staff, and friends of SMU to gets this moving in the right direction. Thanking failed effort should be the final chapter of Junes's legacy.

The sun has risen today and it looks like HCCM!

First let me say the welcome was one of the classiest acts of appreciation and support anybody who showed up could provide. The players were absolutely surprised, humbled, and appreciated the fact that anybody even cared.

As to the nonsense that 'most' quit about the same time as Jones, that is utter nonsense, I have refuted it since day one, and this game PROVED that your theory is complete BS. 0-11, on the road, head coach quit 10 weeks ago, 70% of current staff also quit, terrible conditions raining and cold, down by 2 touchdowns.......and they still come back and win. If they had ever quit, they would have never led 6-0, and if they had quit in them they would have certainly laid down when it was 20-6. Either apologize or STFU with your nonsense!!

The sun HAS risen today and it looks like HCCM....on that we can agree.

You would be wrong, because you've either never played sports, never played on a struggling team fighting for it's first win, or just luckily played on great teams your whole life.

Agree 100% footballdad. Class act by SMU athletics,, those who showed up ... coaches and players will remember this in an appreciative way. For those who never played the game and/or love to arm chair QB, I understand your position and why you think it is BS. This team never quit ... the WHOLE year ... if you understand sports psychology there is a big dif between being beat up and beat down and the fall-out of all that ... and quitting.

I don't tweet ... did any of our new coaching staff tweet a congrats post to the team and/or coaches?

This team was the worst in the nation and played so pathetically poorly and undisciplined at times that I was embarrassed that they wore SMU colors and that they had been fooled by the previous staff that they were D1 players. Assuming they had quit is probably the nicest assumption that could be made. If what we saw was their best, dogged effort in the face of adversity...wow.

And yes, any competative player would have seen that reception as patronizing. If beating UCONN does it for your year and checks off some goals, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Please change your avatar to something other than coach Morris, he would surely be disgusted to have 'fans' like you using his image.

Good luck at SHSU. We'll be cheering for you.
