How to beat Tulsa

Postby Dement-ed » Thu Oct 20, 2005 11:02 pm

I don't think I'll get inducted to a hall of fame anywhere for this, but we need to:

Double-team TE Garrett Mills. He's got unreal hands, and they throw to him over and over and over.

Smack the QB, to force a few errant throws.

Kick away from Ashlan Davis.

Run the ball -- the big freshman DT from Cedar Hill (Nemons) is starting, and he's a monster, but the rest of their defensive line isn't that big.

Get the ball in Jessie Henderson's hands. I don't care if we induce Tulsa into kicking to him, slip him a few screen passes and end-arounds or let him run into the huddle with the ball stuffed up inside his jersey. The fact that he never touched the ball last week hurt.
HOORAY, BEER!

for about the 3rd straight week Bennett said he meant to get Henderson in but just didn't get around to it.

I'm eager to see Henderson run wild Saturday. If the kickoffs stay on the field, special teams could play a huge part in the outcome. Everyone knows about Ashlan Davis (the way people talk about him up here, you'd think he was Rocket Ismail), but Tulsa's return game is better than their kick coverage. I could see both guys having a big day.

Hope a bunch of PonyFans come up -- going to be a great day to watch an SMU victory!

I know the band is going, after all those years in the WAC, this is the first time they have ever been to Tulsa. If you're thinking of returning your season tickets, or not donating to the Mustang Club, at least give some of that extra money to the band or Diamond M Club! I think you should still support football, but if you've totally given up, here are some reasons to adopt the Mustang Band as your new "team":

-Uniforms are the same since the Hayden Fry era! Tradition is important!
-The 5-star (according to batonrivals.com) twirler is now performing as a true junior and still has another year of eligibility
-The two guys in charge are loyal pre-DP SMU alums and fans and don't see this job as a stepping stone
-This year's freshmen class is strong with several all key recruits getting plenty of playing time

I'll be watching on my CSTV all-access thing, hope to see some red and blue in the stands!

I'll bet we're paying her. That's the only way we could've kept her out of the Big 12.

Which LB will be assigned to shadow Mills or do the safeties get that honor?

JT,
SMU has plenty to offer any high school twirler (full-qualifiers that is). The shopping, hello...not to mention the SMU greek scene, ranked number 5 by US News and World Report. The Big 12 (of the crappiest "cities" in America) has nothing on Dallas and SMU! Besides, I heard BU is considering installing turf because their baton twirler line keeps falling out of form to graze. No high school girl wants to be associated with that.

EastStang: my assumption is that it will be a combination of the two. I would bet Alvin Nnabuife, a converted safety, or Wilton McCray, the fastest LB, will get some of the duty, but I bet SS Joe Sturdivant finds himself on Mills a lot, too.

I'm glad the band is going -- I'll be there, too.

How many rivals.com stars do this year's band freshmen have? Where else did they get offers?

Forgive me for being bitter, but I still think about the band mustering the cash to go to Hawaii, yet being unable to make it to Houston a few years ago. So with all due respect to loyal PonyFans with band backgrounds, I'll continue to donate to the Mustang Club, and to buy -- and use -- my season tickets.

Uh, what are you talking about?

Last time SMU played at UHouston was 2000, and we sent a 40-50 person pep band that played in the stands. It was the CHEERLEADERS that did not go, and THEY later took a trip to the Hawaii game.

The band almost always chooses away games starting with the closest. When I was in band (2000-04) we went to Rice every other year, Houston, Ok State, TCU, Baylor, and Tech. Trust me, the band isn't squandering all its money for a big blowout trip to Orlando every year or anything.

Rather impressive braincramp on my part, huh? I apologize to band members and band alums. Pardon me while I remove a massive chunk of shoe from my mouth.

Dude, don't get on the wrong side of the band. If you want to play it safe, it is better to offend the cheerleaders. The band will show up at your house at 3AM and play Peruna. And when you tell them to stop, they'll play it again . . . and again . . . and again.
