Ha. The pitch deserves its own thread! An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower

At this point it should have its own board, right? Shake It Off Moody
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?Watching on tv I remember a BYU TD catch in the final comeback minutes being a 1
hopper ![]() Had review been in effect, we most likely would've won ![]() Ponyte did you get a good look at it ![]() May the forth be with us.
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?
There and agree on the refs, Solo.
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?I was across the field during the questionable catch. The two officials there had to consult prior to making the call. According to our DB there, he said the officials asked each other if they got a clean look. Both said they didn't then one said, 'Well, we gotta call something" and gave BYU a TD. Review would have been nice but it certainly wasn't part of the game then.
To my knowledge, Ron never engaged in obvious mind games. We were all business and playing hard. Do your job, play hard, attention to detail and no need to play mind games. Stallion posted a link a few months back with the play called the pitch in it. Pony Excess has a clip of the pitch but it is edited where one can barely see all the blocking of that play. And to be sure, during the awards banquet, we were escorted by the women of the WAC schools. I drew the BYU woman and in that brief moment I did my best to see if she believed would consider some premarital experimentation with polygamy. I mean its the only vice that religion allows so what the heck I thought.

And that ladies and gentlemen sums up the male thought process during the college years. ![]() ![]() That made me laugh out loud, ponyte. GO MUSTANGS!
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?At the game and it looked like a romp until... Craig James had about 250 yards rushing. If we had won, would have been in the Top Ten. Ah, the good old days. Hard to watch that Hail Mary, but the rest of the game is all SMU.
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?Rick, my brother, and I were up in the upper deck with a great view from around the fifty. I said to Rick, lets go down to the sidelines because the SMU fans will want to celebrate this one... So, we walked down the ramps as fast as possible and when we came out on the lower level, damn if they hadn't closed the gap... I walked over to the sideline railing and I remember fog rolling in or already settling on the field. Then that damn ending. We were so pissed we drove all the way through the fog to the Sierras that night just to try and forget...
I should dig out my pictures... About 25 feet from the Hillcrest track... With the boots so tall and the writing on the wall...

Great minds think alike. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?I was there too, in the end zone where that last pass was thrown. I too thought it one hopped. Lots of questionable calls in that game. Twas a major bummer!
Re: 1980 Holiday Bowl - Anybody recall this?
That's because it is no longer known as "The Pitch" but been renamed "The Block". See link viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9950&start=480 "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
