When I was a very young lad growing up in northern Illinois, I used to listen to the
Mustangs play Notre Dame and Michigan in football, and they were very exciting to
me. Later in life I went to work at SMU and walked past the Doaker's statue on my
way to work. A lot of people in the Midwest were excited about the aerial circus
that was SMU football and all the people I talked to knew about Southern Methodist.

Hopefully the new generation is about to learn about us all over again.

About 10 years ago I was at the Rose Bowl parade when OU played Wash St. I met a father/son, dad was alumni, son was student. I told them I graduated from SMU, son said, 'where is that?'

My initial response was to simply look at the Dad, his expression, as I'm sure mine, was priceless.

SoCal_Pony to Dad - your son's that dumb?
OU Dad - yes, he is that dumb.

I did tell the kid SMU was in Dallas. Kid was being sincere, he didn't know.

I imagine the majority of DFW public school children have never heard of SMU, much less know where it is. Even with the presence of AVID in many schools, you rarely see an SMU pennant in campus displays of dozens from colleges around the country.

What is avid? No kids know what/where SMU is just like they probably don't know where Rice is.

I once went into a Walgreens or CVS (one or the other) less than 10 miles from campus wearing a t-shirt that said "Southern Methodist" and had the Peruna logo on it. The cashier said "Southern Methodist, is that like a church?" I said, no, it's a university - SMU. The response: "Oh, where's that at."

When I said that it was off 75 at Mockingbird, they were blown away: they had no idea that there was a school called SMU in Dallas.

my CPA, originally from Kuwait but who offices in Irving and is a UT-A alum, once listed my Mustang Club donation deduction as "Southern Methodist-Church donation" on the first draft of a tax return

I'll second this. My work tales me through many schools across DFW, and you see more Dallas Baptist than SMU. Way, way, way more TCU than SMU.
