Baylor game gone?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Baylor game gone? Here's one vote for letting Morris determine the fate of his future schedule based on what HE thinks is best. Regardless of SWC politics, SMU politics, fan griping, etc.etc.
Re: Baylor game gone?Baylor had the best football performance, with the better facilities and the best attendance of the remaining SWC schools at the time they got the Big 12 offer. The rest of the schools were lead by administrations that didn't properly value the benefits of a strong athletic program in a nationally high profile athletic conference-mistakes which have cost those schools Hundreds of Millions of Dollars. All these teams were riding the coattails of Texas, A&M and Arkansas and had failed to invest in their programs for 3-4 decades. Why weren't they building facilities before it too late-they sure have since the SWC breakup

Re: Baylor game gone?
Next two seasons, lets fill the schedule with losers and other non-P5 schools. Do that in order to get double digit wins, and do it until you are good enough from a recruiting stand point to beat better teams. Some of you guys need to get a grip and realize that our basketball team has only played 25% of its non-conference schedule against good teams. Do you want to play Gonzaga every week in basketball non-conference and enter the conference schedule a .500 team? That is just stupid. Nobody in basketball does it except for Texas Southern, and check out how that is working out for them. Take a look at TCU. We all know they aren't a great basketball team right now. Would they be better off playing a decent schedule and going into the big 12 at .500? Or is it better for them to play bad teams and be undefeated, get in the top 25 and get some media attention? The latter does way, way more for the program at this stage so that they can attract recruits. If Morris starts off the season 4-0 playing the children of the poor, it will get us a lot more attention from recruits than going 2-2 or 1-3 non-conference. The same people are on here claiming our roster is awful but demanding that we play really difficult teams non conference. That makes no sense. Play a bunch of weaklings to keep the momentum going until the roster is built up for the new systems, and THEN start scheduling up.
Re: Baylor game gone?I hope Chad Morris isn't such a [deleted] like many SMU fans
We play Baylor and TCU because we have a 100 years of tradition playing the schools that are most like ourselves and those are only teams on our schedule that fans and recruits want to see SMU play. I can't wait to see season ticket sales if we play the schedule some of you think we should Do not marginalize the SMU football program-do not harm the rivalries-it is very possible you will not get another opportunity to revive these rivalries once you destroy them. This philosophy will make SMU irrelevant in this market with no distinction from NTSU "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: Baylor game gone?
Floyd Casey Stadium wasn't exactly a prize, although to be fair even Memorial Stadium in Austin was a crappy facility in the mid-90s. How quickly we forget that all of the SWC schools had facilities that were in bad shape at the time.
Re: Baylor game gone?I would hope that Hart & Co. has a good talk with Morris about the scheduling issue.
I would think it is very possible that for Morris to be able to get the kind of recruits that he wants, that he would want to play Baylor and TCU. I would hope that is the case. I think it is much easier to compete for some players recruited by Texas/ A&M etc if they know they are going to get to play against a top notch schedule and compete at that level.
Re: Baylor game gone?
SMU is relevant in this market? Since when?
Re: Baylor game gone?
Considering TSU has wins at both Michigan State and Kansas State already this season, they may not be your best example.
Re: Baylor game gone?
We own the 75225-2505 market
Re: Baylor game gone?I honestly can't imagine us trying to buy out of Baylor again. Like others have said we better enjoy these traditional rivalry games while we can b/c there is a day coming very soon where the reality is we might never play them again. Now I can understand if Baylor is trying to buy out of the game given what happened to them this year but no way SMU is trying to buy out of it. If Baylor wants out of the game we better hold their feet to the fire for every last cent b/c whoever we replace them with on the schedule won't bring a faction of the fans they will to Ford. We need Baylor and UNT to float us for the conference attendance dip.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Baylor game gone?I just look forward to the day where we can BEAT these teams and I can walk into the mall or any big box chain store and see SMU gear right along side all this other purple, burnt orange, and green crap. Will take beating these teams to do that. (because if we beat them and get to a "real" bowl, people will start taking notice outside of the program). I just want SMU to be relevant again nationally - we are starting to in bball (need to get to the tourney though).
Re: Baylor game gone?
I totally hear you. Its beyond deflating to walk around Dallas and see virtually zero SMU presence outside of the Park Cities and Lakewood area. I think basketball is getting there but college basketball is about 12 rungs down the ladder of the DFW sports fan. We need to be relevant in football. No other way around it. I think CM is the man that can make that happen. Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Baylor game gone?
So, what do you think is better? The unknown of TCU being undefeated and ranked? Or TSU 2-9 or whatever they are with two good wins? If you have a .500 or worse record absolutely nobody pays attention to you, regardless of who you played. Marshall didn't play ANYONE this year. But they still had media talking about them and recruit awareness because of their undefeated record. Step 1: schedule down and get to double digit wins. Step 2: schedule up. YOU GUYS JUST DON'T GET IT. If we play a really difficult non-conference basketball schedule last year, Moody Magic never happens. We were a big unknown coming out of non-conference play, but because we had a great record everyone came out to support the team and packed the gym. That DOESN'T HAPPEN FOR A .500 TEAM IN DALLAS. Play TCU OR Baylor in non-conference until we are good enough to compete with both. Go into conference with a winning record, start building up the recruiting classes and then go and upgrade the schedule. To Stallion's point, we haven't played Baylor every single year since the breakup of the SWC, and we were able to get back on their schedule. Same with A&M and Texas Tech. Whittling the schedule down so that TCU is the only P5 school on it for the next couple of years isn't going to hurt anybody, it will just help with program recognition.
Re: Baylor game gone?People didn't start filling Moody because we beat the sub-200 RPI schools.
They filled Moody because we started beating Top 25 teams once we got to Moody. Don't kid yourself. That's what it will take to start filling Ford. ![]()
Re: Baylor game gone?
Exactly. Two P5 programs, UNT, and a D1AA program should be the format. If you can't go at least 2-2 or 3-1 with that schedule then get better. Back off Warchild seriously.
