I agree, but it depends on what you think the TCU model is. This year, TCU had 3 nonconference games: Samford, SMU and Minnesota. Much was made of the Minnesota game, but I see a middle of the road big 10 team that has been below average more often than not.

To hear some, we shouldn't schedule Samford. Well, TCU did. TCU will again. TCU has scheduled plenty of I-AA games over the years.

Whatever model TCU or any P5 is using today is irrelevant. SMU needs wins for the next couple years and then worry about OOC scheduling.

Let's look at what TCU did as they built their program in CUSA and the MWC.

First, we still have the butts in seats issues, and games with former SWC rivals helps pack the stadium. Secondly, TCU and Baylor both give us measuring stick games to help us see how we need to improve. Third, when we get good, they give us quality wins to perhaps get into a New Year's Day game.

Who cares about butts in seats, the goal should be to make the OOC schedule as weak as possible so we can go to an irrelevant bowl game.

Looks to me like aside from the occasional UC-Davis, Tennessee Tech, Army, or ULa-Monroe, they only really played one weak team per year.....us.

They did get lucky and play some "good teams" when down like Stanford, OU and USC (in 1998 Sun Bowl which was one of the bigger perception changers for TCU) while SMU has gotten EXTREMELY unlucky playing resurgent TCU and Baylor and A&M in Johnny Manziel's debut. A strong SMU team needs to get a break and play a down UT or Tech. June's big wins were against a weaker, young, inexperienced TCU team and Pitt which was a walking zombie. But guess what that's not how schedules are made-so tough tittie

That's great but when we get our dix knocked in the dirt, we're left with the same ole 5,000 per game the rest of the season.

sounds like June terminology - "Oh, that score doesn't matter. It was just a measuring stick game."

We've got a lot of catching up to do. There won't be a coach stick around long enough to provide any consistency. Let the deep pockets keep calling the shots... it makes them feel important even if the result is extreme mediocrity. There is absolutely no one - with any say-so - DEMANDING a winner. All the "champion" talk is words on a brochure.

Thanks for the link. For those that want to follow the TCU model:

96 - 1 upper BCS, 1 lower BCS, 1 non-BCS- went 1-2 against those teams, no bowl.
97 - 1, 2, 0 - 1-3, no bowl
98 - 1, 2, 0 - 2-1, bowl
99 - 1, 1, 2 - 2-2, bowl
00 - 0, 1, 2 - 3-0, bowl, first 10 win season
01 - 1, 0, 3 - 2-2, bowl
02 - 0, 1, 2 - 3-0, bowl, 10 wins
03 - 1, 1, 2 - 4-0, bowl, 11 wins.

The upper BCS teams were OU, Nebraska, and Arizona
Lower BCS were Vandy, Northwestern, and Iowa State.

From 98 to 2003, 15 of their non conference opponents finished with LOSING records. 1 was .500 and 5 had winning records.

Thank you for proving my point. TCU got good by scheduling 1 measuring stick game every year, and for the other non-conference games scheduled absolutely horrible BCS teams and non-BCS teams. AND THEY DID NOT TARGET TEAMS IN TEXAS. They didn't worry about local rivalries. They had one money game every year and then worried about their record.

If you look at their first three double digit win seasons, they beat northwestern in 00, Northwestern in 02, and then Arizona and Vandy in 03. Arizona I counted as a major BCS school, but they went 2-10 that year.

NO one cares about that. They just cared about 10 wins. Those seasons pulled in the recruits that allowed them to schedule up in the future. If TCU had started out by scheduling top BCS teams from the beginning, they would have gone 6-6 or 7-5 every year and would never have taken that step forward.

Live in reality and learn from history.

We can get wins in conference play, OOC is where we schedule games people give a damn about.

Those people that give a damn? How many extra SMU fans actually show up to our stadium for these un-touchable games? What percentage of the total extra fans in our stadium are visiting fans?

A few thousand, and 90% maybe?

since the demise of the SWC, we avg less than 1 non-conference win a year. We are 16 of 72 in non conference. You take out I-AA, which some believe is beneath us, we have 9 nonconference regular season wins since the SWC disbanded. 2 against Arkansas, 2 against TCU, 1 against Kansas, navy, arky state, NTSU and wash state.

The nonconference schedule is a problem.

If you want TCU, Baylor and A&M every year, you better have a patsy the 4th game or you are insisting the head coach go .750 in conference just to get to 6-6. SMU has gone .750 in conference exactly once in that time frame.

Since the demise of the SWC, Our winning percentage in-conference is 41%. Don't take conference wins as a given.

I've said it many times before, the scheduling formula needs to be:

1 FCS school
2 lower-level AQ schools (Vandy, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado, Wazzu, Wake Forest) - TCU would be one of these when they are having a down cycle
1 upper-level AQ school - should be TCU when they are having an up cycle

Our approach to building teams is the problem. If Morris gets us to where we want to be on the recruiting trail then we can actually start winning some of those games. Hiding from good teams just because a bunch of our lousy teams from the past couldn't beat them doesn't make much sense.
