SEC had a year without any great QBs and that generally translates to somebody else winning the National Championship, but top to bottom I still think they are the best conference in the country. They just don't have the best team in the country...for 2 straight years now.

Getting back to the question that started this thread, I think the Big XII might be the worst because their traditional powers, Texas and OU were down...but I really believe it won't be long before Charlie Strong has Texas back in the national championship hunt.

I well remember the incident where Woody Hayes punched an opposing player on the sideline. I found an ESPN article about that day.

I disagree with the statement in the article that the announcers said nothing. I could not have named the announcers before I read article but one of them said to the other, sotto voice, something like, "Did you see that?" It was not mentioned again though.

As to whether they liked him in Ohio, it is also my memory that they let him keep a stadium office after his dismissal. The article I read had an element of surprise just like the broadcaster's remark during the game. Today I would guess that keeping an office after he was finished coaching was a contract item.

My wife and I saw one game at Ohio Stadium and that was when Dave Smith's Mustangs played there. We went to Columbus on a lark hoping to buy tickets outside the stadium but those on offer were way too much. Coach Smith gave us tickets. He also gave tickets to a pair of OSU kids who happened along. I thought the OSU fan behavior that day was much like the home crowd at other games I've attended, and no more out of line - or sober - than I recall at OU - Texas weekends in Dallas.

The very clear message the Big 12 gave was that there would be one true champion because everyone played the other members...well, that didn't work out so well. Then, as mentioned, the perennial powers were down this year. Add to that the way that the two 'co-champions' recorded their respective losses, and you get a bit of bias and cynicism from the rest of the college football community.

Baylor pooping in it's own chili during the bowl game doesn't help either....kinda takes the "we got left out, but were deserving" argument right out of the conversation. Got to hand it to TCU: they sent a message that there will be no quarter given in view of the "unbiased" committee's decision...just curb-stomping the opponent leaves very little doubt as to whether you are 'worthy'.

The Big 12 had the worst possible situation occur for them, and could have it happen again next year. They are HOPING that there is no need for the commish to have to re-define their true champion next December.
