SMU Blue wrote:There are rumors that multiple players are not happy in the Charlie Strong system, and may be asking for transfers out of Austin. Some of them are from Dallas. Any chance the SMU coaches will reach out to these players?
1) Jake Oliver - Sophomore that graduated from Dallas Jesuit. He is 6'4", 200 lb wide receiver that was a 4-Star recruit in high school.
2) Curtis Riser - Desoto high school graduate. He is a 6'3" offensive guard that was a 4-Star recruit in high school.
3) Garret Gray - Marble Falls. He was a 3-Star wide receiver that we offered in 2013.
4) Tim Cole - He was a 4-Star linebacker from Brenham.
Thoughts?
It is my understanding that it is a NCAA Violation to recruit players until they get a release from the old school. The main problem with transfers is that the team needs help now. How many guys do we want sitting out next year while on scholarship?

Don't forget the guy from LSU who couldn't play a lick. Sometimes, they fail at P5 schools because they cannot play.

Ashcraft wasn't too bad. Provided quality depth. I'd take all of them and see how it goes.

Correct, SMU can't contact the recruit directly. But there is nothing that says the player can't contact his old high school coach to chat with him about his playing status. Then his high school coach can chat with college coaches who are recruiting the high school, and mention that he is unhappy at that school. Happens all the time. And one of the great things about Coach Morris is his relationship with all of the Texas high school coaches...

The contact thing can be easily worked around. Don't be such a rule follower.

I watched Jake Oliver play at Jesuit. He was a beast! He caught everything that came his way. Good speed and size.

I think Ashcraft had a knee thing he was playing through. He struggled at tackle but I think he played better at guard if I recall.

The only real disappointment for me was Lowe - not sure what happened to him/why he seemed to be so lazy - but he didn't come from Texas (LSU). I can't fault Shead really other than his fumbling problems, but his decision to leave early was puzzling. Now that I think about it, yeah he was a real disappointment but I liked him. Not sure what his issues were - ran tentatively a little bit and the fumbling. But the injuries were a real bummer for the kid I'm sure.

Shead never went to class. He made a business decision. A terrible one albeit, but really the only one he had since class wasn't a part of his routine.

Ashcraft played most of the UCF game at guard and I think did pretty well. Not much before that. After being at the game I went back and watched it on TIVO because I was surprised the line played that well. He was in there most if not all of the game. With transfers (not those who have graduated), if they contact SMU coaches - they are told they have to get a release to talk to either all schools or specific schools. One SMU has that release in hand they can contact them.

I watched Jake Oliver play at Jesuit too. Supposed to be the best HS receiver ever, but I don't remember seeing him doing a whole lot in Longview's playoff easy second round victory against them a couple of years ago
May the forth be with us.

The hit rate on these transfers for SMU has been well below 50%, but if you can make it work financially why not take as many as you possibly can and hope to hit on another Gilbert?

50% is great in College recruiting. Don't forget Shawnbray McNeal and of course we live by transfers in BB
