LB should leave and take every interview to explain how [deleted] up our athletics are. If this is how it is going to be... I want public scrutiny to be at an all time high and a metaphorical knife at every upper level SMU officials neck!

Chill "22". I'm worried about your health. It's just a game !!

Also, I have not even been on PF a year and yet 1200+ posts. Average of 4 a day... one could I assume I care more for these teams than it just "being a sport".[/quote]

If we can't keep Keith eligible, shame on SMU. That should have been priority #1 after we lost MK and to let this happen - make sure everyone is on track academically.

Perunas Law indeed. Really hoping this isn't true but I really have no reason to doubt it. Problem with being an SMU fan is I can't stop myself from immediately jumping to the worst-case scenarios that could come from this...

Do we or do we not have more academic casualties than peer programs?

Completely agree. 3 guys with eligibility problems is 100% on smu

We had one academic eligibility problem. We have one guy who was getting buried on the bench and checked out/bailed. And we have vague rumors about KF having problems but no real info, proof, details, etc. Let's see what the actual situation is before we panic.

LB could, and should, leave. No point in dealing with this nonsense anymore. He can go wherever he wants without the constant worry if he's going to lose all his contributors during the season. There is no excuse for this. SMU should know more about what it takes to have an actual competitive program.

No one is too worried about Martin leaving, but his academic issues coupled with 2 of our best players has to be incredibly concerning to everyone. I see what you are saying and apologize for freaking out over this before it is 100% confirmed, but it is just so damn disheartening.

So, just some points here...

1) June has said for years there are academic support issues. LB hinted to it. LeRebius commented on it. Everyone was called out for BS. Now this happens and all of a sudden everyone finally believes SMU isn't as supportive of the players academically as it should be? Everyone called me out as a "June Lover" for saying where there is smoke there is fire, but I'm not, all I was saying when feedback comes from a lot of different sources it is time to pay attention.

2) That said, I really do believe that if this stuff wasn't resolved, CM wouldn't have taken the job. So I tend to believe the comment by RGV that designated tudors are being provided for BB and football now. That is really important, because the tutors can help to babysit the players' performance in class instead of relying on the coaches to do it, because the coaches obviously struggle at it.

3) The path of pulling in players that are academic risks in order to improve the program is always risky. TCU went through the same roller coaster when they built their program. The plus is that every once in a while you have a guy like LT come along who nobody thought would get into school much less stay in school, and bam, it is awesome. By taking on these risks, SMU got on the map. Now we can take guys who fit the system and are academically strong, like next year's class.

4) I know it seems like the sky is falling. But next year we still have Nic, Sterling, Ben E, Shake, Foster and Barefield in the backcourt, and Tolbert, Ben M, Semi, and hopefully MK in the front court. We will switch to be more perimeter oriented with 3 guard sets. More full court man. We will struggle a little bit to make the switch, but in the end we will actually be a more dangerous tourney play because guards are everything in the tourney.

All students, including those who happen to be athletes, must still attend class, do the work, learn the material, write the papers, take the exams (and PASS them) to remain at SMU. Plenty of other students, every semester, are placed on academic probation, suspended, or even sometimes dismissed (expelled, forever) for not making the grades. Every student at SMU has to be willing to learn and do the work and take advantage of the services offered - if they don't, why should that somehow translate into becoming someone else's fault other than their own?
Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.

Because if they didn't play sports they wouldn't have had a prayer of getting in. We use them to excel in our athletic conference and increase our stature.
