Coach Smith serves on the Texas High School Coaches Association Board of Directors, a position he was elected to in the summer of 2014. He is also serving as the current President for the North Texas Football Coaches Association

Forgive my naivety but do HS coaches have as much pull as we think with football players? Seem sort of irrelevant in basketball. I know we'll take any advantage we can get, but I'm assuming he's a good hire because of his connections with TX HS FB coaches? Somebody school me please. Thanks.

It's more with coaches. But with bb it's all about the asu circuit anyway

The HS coach can steer kids to a particular school especially if the player doesn't have an obvious favorite or some big time program is recruiting him.

Plenty of SMU recruiting battles will be between other AAC teams and lower tier B12 . The coach might recommend SMU over say Iowa State since he knows the coach will treat the kid right.

Recruiters need contacts to find the best recruits-that's what it is all about. Few kids are controlled by high school coaches unless they are their "father figure". Also some positive feedback never hurts

Being from H-E-B, aka Hurst-Euless-Bedford (as I am, too), maybe he can be instrumental in recruiting Tongans for us. Trinity and Bell are the two high schools in this district, and everyone knows how good Trinity football has been in recent years with several Tongans on their teams.

Maybe we need a coach with major Hawaii ties to get them
