2:30 p.m. Update
SMU guard Keith Frazier will miss Saturday's game against East Carolina to attend a funeral of a family member according to SMU head coach Larry Brown in a statement released through the university.
Brown did comment on a waiver submitted for Frazier's academic eligibility.
"As far as his eligibility status, we have filed an appeal with the NCAA regarding his academic eligibility, and we’re optimistic that we will have him back on the court soon," Brown said in a statement. "It’s important for people to know that the resources and support are in place for student-athletes to be successful, both athletically and academically, at SMU.”
Look for Sterling Brown and Ben Emelogu to get in the mix for the starting role at guard and Ben Moore as well, who worked on the perimeter prior to Markus Kennedy being ineligible for the first semester.

The rest of the quotes from Larry Brown say it's just a GPA issue with Keith -- http://espn.go.com/dallas/mens-college- ... roprieties

Yes...then the story continues hinting that LB doesn't quite know how to run a clean program when it comes to academics. Nice.

SMU needs an immediate public statement denying it has received a Letter of Inquiry or Letter of Violations concerning its BASKETBALL program if that is true. The Letter might be due to Golf Program. Need a clear statement either way because its out there. The receipt of a Letter of Inquiry or Letter of Violations should be clearly disclosed even by a private school like SMU

That is why schools have a whole staff of compliance officers to make sure that things run smoothly. Even little old Northern KY university down the block from me has an Associate AD and all she and her staff do is make sure that everyone behaves.

I'm not going to lie, now that this is becoming a trend, this falls on the coaching staff. Larry needs to start doing his job better. SMU isn't helping matters but I imagine Larry at 70 whatever isn't holding the kids hands on the way to class anymore.

I think some of the feeling on this is in regards to the optics. Seems LB's time at NCAA institutions often coincides with academic integrity questions. A fun question is whether UNC has seen one of these yet. I haven't looked at it, don't know, but would love to start a hearing about this asking about the status of the UNC case.

Yes it is. They have aides who check to make sure students are in class and everything or assistants. That is on the coaching staff. This is a trend. It's partially on the university as well but the staff needs them to get their sh*t together. About to start losing scholarships due to APR score dropping so low with 3 players having been academically ineligible. Doesn't help that Mudiay was also not getting through the NCAA Clearinghouse.....it's a trend.

Is there actually an "optimistic chance" Keith will be back, or is LB just trying to spin the story?
