#4 Texas (23 D-I Schools)
Carrying the state flag: No. 20 Texas and No. 22 Baylor
Supporting schools (with Pom/RPI rank): SMU (25/13), TCU (57/155), Stephen F. Austin (62/118), UTEP (79/98), Texas A&M (86/57), Sam Houston State (92/92), Incarnate Word (145/90), Texas Southern (147/94)
Combined record for these 10 teams: 112-45
Need to know: This ranking could be higher, if not for a couple things. First, if Emmanuel Mudiay was playing for SMU instead of opting to play professionally in China, the Mustangs would almost certainly be a top-15 team instead of just a solid at-large squad. And outstanding Texas freshman point guard Isaiah Taylor missed each of the Longhorns’ first two losses (one in overtime), knocking the team down from its preseason No. 10 ranking. Still, with 10 teams ranked in the top 100 by either RPI or Pomeroy, there is plenty of quality depth in the Lone Star state.
