I think you're right. He's always had elite talent but I can't ever remember one of his teams exceeding, or even reaching expectations. And individually, I can't really remember a player leaving UT as a much better player than when they arrived. As for KD, he could've had me as his college HC and he'd still be leading the world in scoring, and one of the best players ever.
Exactly. They've sure had some special talent in Austin...and some good athletes, too!

Didn't Texas significantly exceed expectations last year? Going into the season a lot of people said Barnes was in danger of losing his job as they had a lot of players transfers or go pro, but they ended up 23-10 with a 7 seed. I agree with the overall point that he is a better recruiter than coach (I thought everyone accepted this) but they did exceed expectations last year.

slow clap...you can pull up high school rankings. Name one kid he took that was drafted much higher than his high school ranking. I never argued that Barnes doesn't recruit well. You just rattled off a list of highly ranked/recruited kids that Barnes didn't damage too badly. I'm not sure any coach in America has wasted more talent than Barnes. Not one. BTW, what are you still doing here? You quit SMU remember??
Nope...no research needed. Those are some good NBA names and I happen to know where they went to college. Barnes has taken Texas to 15 NCAA tourneys out of the 16 yrs he has been there. I see no reason to bash him as he has had more success than SMU's entire history of college basketball. He is obviously doing something right. And no, I'm still here. Have you ever heard the guy speak? Comes off dumb as a box of rocks. Cant be Barnes that is the great recruiter - has to be his staff. Maybe a Maligi replacement in there somewhere.
