Of course, there are plenty of quotes to chew over.

June says we "overcorrected"-let too many ACADEMICALLY marginal students in. Darn you SMU Admissions for letting June's recruits into school-50% of which didn't have Division 1A offers. I thought the problem was that SMU's Coaches offered too many ATHLETICALLY marginal students. Poor guy for the first time in 40 years he's finally getting some vacation time

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Jones is coming across more and more as a completely self-centered fraud. About the only thing he's quoted as saying in that whole article that I actually believe is that he chased the money to come to SMU... that's where the truth ended and the lies started. He quit on the job because he figured out that you actually have to work to succeed at SMU... and he didn't want to do that - he just wanted to collect a salary and coast.

“Leigh said, ‘We’ve agreed on a deal to make you the new Arizona State coach,’” Jones says.

Moments later, he says he received a call from Love.

“June, we have some bad news. We’re going in a different direction,’” Jones says Love told him.

He lied to every one of us in that Mustang Club luncheon. He said he was never offered the job, IIRC. He said Steinberg was talking to ASU, but he was never offered the job directly. I need to look that up from that thread discussion the luncheon, if I can find it.

Coaches use agents for plausible deniability all the time. That's why they use agents. "Oh, I never had a discussion with ASU." Interpretation - "my agent had extensive negotiations." "I'm not sure I would have taken the job". Interpretation. "I hadn't seen a final contract, yet, but what I heard I liked". In other words, agents provide a perfect fall guy for the coach to deny any deal with any school. Jones problem is that his agent has a bigger ego than Jones and wouldn't fall on his sword and disembowel himself as most agents do. After all the old joke what's the difference between a prostitute and a sport's agent? There are some things a prostitute won't do.

He said he never got an offer during the 1on1 part, but during the Q&A someone asked a question about the contract. He admitted then a contract was being worked up w/ASU but he doesn't get a call with the 'offer' until the contract is done being written. So he kind of blew his own plausible deniability with that.

And yes, about half the people in the room stood up and applauded for him when he took the stage, but there was definitely half the room seated quietly.

I found this gem in the thread from Nick17:

I also think JJ is [deleted] at SMU for not letting him out of buyout, and it woudnt surprise me if he just coasted along doing the minimum or worse, until we fire him.

it was defn discussed that he was a risk to try and get fired...

Nick saw into the future, except we didn't ever fire him.

So over hearing this coward of a man's name.

Even so, Jones says he believes he left the program in a better place, and that his successor, Chad Morris, will have a better chance to win there.

Already angling to take credit for whatever Morris accomplishes.

Maybe he can come back when they invite Bobby Collins for a visit...

I'd have Bobby Collins back before June Jones.
