Some of that weight was because of the good folks at Snuffer's and a few breweries, but I also didn't spend quite as much time as I assume he will (or any time, to be honest). Considering how big his dad was, there doesn't seem to be any reason to assume he won't bulk up.
I think some people are being short sighted and assuming he will play right away and not take a red shirt year to grow and adjust. He is undersized right now for DT, but I am sure the new strength coach and probably his dad too (given he is a former strength coach) have a plan, if he is really moving to the interior. At least we aren't in the days of taking 200lb players and hoping they grow.
my question is that if his dad is a strength coach why is he not already at an adequate size?

I think he may have seen himself as a 4-3 Defensive End

Go look at a picture of the kid. He's a pretty damn jacked.

Yeah, dude has a frame that can add weight no problem. If he redshirts, he will be 285 easy the day of his first snap.

I say put Mel de Laura as his personal trainer.

You've got that completely backward
Safety to LB
OLB to DE
DE to DT
You physically develop size and speed from more athletic positions to "less athletic" positions. This isn't rocket science. How could you watch college football for years and not know that? HINT: There are only 8 highly recruited Defensive Tackles/Nose Guards this year in the entire state of Texas. Pretty much like every year. There are 12 Division 1A programs. How do coaches make the numbers work?
Back in the PB days we took 220 lb DEs and hoped they would be effective when they were juniors and could carry 260 lbs.
When the next staff got here, we started treating the undersized DEs as OLB because it was a better size profile. We have been recruiting people who actually were already appropriately sized at the OL and DL for the last several years.
I was hoping that we weren't moving back to the strategy of let's pick up the undersized guy and grow him to be a decent football player.

He won't even be here for 7 months. Guy will be plenty big by his second year. I wanted DT and RB more than any other position in this class so I'm happy

more than receiver? I feel like that was the least productive offensive position of all this past season.

June Jones signed exactly 1 proto-type sized ready to go DT/NG coming out of high school in his entire tenure-Mike O'Guin who never played. The rest were a foot or two below par and/or 30 to 40 pounds below par when they signed. Toughest position to recruit and now with the 4-2-5 we need to fill 2 DT positions and 2 DE positions. Until Morris can get his type of players into the lineup, players are going to have to be built in the weight room especially with regard to the DLine and our flyweight LBs. The OLBs especially are going to have to either move up to DE, move to an inside LB position or possibly (with guys like Yenga and Rhone) contribute at the hybrid position. Players are going to have to be transitioned to new positions they might not fit perfectly
Extra DT, technically no NG but another DT, No OLBs but rather Middle and Strong Side LBs with greater run responsibility, extra Hybrid Safety. This is a big transition which will make Spring more interesting than ever before-should be a lot of experimenting

Here's the thing... there are very few high school kids that aren't carrying some bad weight. Even in Texas, they aren't in a college level S&C program with sports nutritionists, top level strength coaches, etc all teaching them the right way to eat and train.
I'd much rather sign a guy that has the right frame and can put on weight while maintaining athleticism than an overweight kid that has to lose 30 pounds before he can even start bulking up to a proper playing weight.

Saw him in practices as a frosh. I was surprised that he could even walk with his knees so smashed inward that he wobbled to walk. I believe he ultimately was injured and could no longer play football.
