Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventOk, now you added more, good for you.
Repost in entirety. I'm curious, was Chad OK with existing support plan under JJ or is he OK with 'new' support plan & not the plan under JJ.
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventI read the original post and while the number did seem preposterously high, Jason is right that the main thrust of the post was passing along what he heard about the previous staff not doing what they should have done while the new staff has shown they will step it up. I did not read it as a defense of June at all and I do not think that was the intent.
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day event
Read it too and agree. He said the last staff got daily reports of guys that didn't go to class and did nothing about it. Like Stallion that number seems way high and as Stallion said we've had guys go thru the roster in past threads and no one ever picked this up. At this point all that matters is that the current staff keeps on top of the academic situation and if their organization in recruiting is any indication, I do not see how they will let any player hang out to dry on the academic side. Re: Some things I heard at the signing day event
Let's pretend that 10% of the football team "flunks out" every year. How does that number compare to the general student body? While I don't have exact numbers, I knew a number of kids at SMU who flunked out - primarily due to drugs and/or booze. How does that compare to other programs? According to Wikipedia, the Graduation Success Rate for D1 Football is 67%. Do unto others before they do unto you!!

Re: Some things I heard at the signing day event
They are happy with the way things are now, but the way the old staff handled the reports was a huge part of the problem. Apparently, the staff has already made it very clear to two players that they shouldn't miss class or tutoring sessions. This is the S&C coach, and this is a bucket. Have fun. Big difference in accountability.

Re: Some things I heard at the signing day event
Question: are all the players required to go to tutoring sessions? Is there a way to "test out?" For the players who don't have academic issues, I could see it as a PITA. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventI like how Coach Morris emphasized the players graduating. He seems to take that responsibility very seriously.
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventLast year at a minor sports team practice I heard the head coach challenge one of his athletes to miss no further English classes or he would automatically be failed. Upon further inquiry I learned that the coach received a daily report on his athletes when they miss any class. Further, that SMU has a policy that you automatically and immediately fail a class if you have more than 5 misses. In this instant, the athlete was going to miss this English class 2 times later in the semester because of travel/competition and even this did not excuse, but counted against the missing 5 classes policy. I have not independently corroborated this policy, but the coach in question left an indelible impression on me with his chewing out of this kid over class attendance.
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day event
Was this an NCAA sport? If so, that's not the case. You can't count the missed classes for school sanctioned NCAA competition. Club sports like mens volleyball or lax, would however couont. Doesn't mean some axhole teacher wouldn't try and pull this crap though. Senior year, I missed my first class in an elective halfway through the semester and got an email that I missed my third and last allowable miss, per her policy. I was confused and asked her what the other dates were, and she said the first two days of class, which I wasn't enrolled in at the time. I told her this, thinking like any normal person that I'd be fine, only to have her say "the other students were here, so you should've been too". I had to get the department head involved because I was going to be missing class a week later for a job interview (which she gave zero [deleted] about). Department head told the [deleted] to go pound sand and that you can't be punished when you weren't even enrolled in the class. And that's how I got a C+ as a second semester senior in a 1000 level class. Some teachers at this school just live on mars..... Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventI got dumped from a class for missing three times. Tough lesson.
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventA lot of schools have a three unexcused absences rule and mandatory drop. Part of this is related to Dept. of Education regulations concerning student loan program. They don't want to loan money for a student to go to college only have the student not go to college and that the school sanctions it by letting the student malinger for a couple of semesters and collects the tuition checks from Sallie Mae.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Some things I heard at the signing day eventUmmm I don't remember a 3 or 5 strike policy when I was at SMU.
