Not a Corner-hell I don't think he's a Safety-I'd move him up as close to the line as possible now that he is filling out. I'd be willing to take a look at him at the hybrid. Darrion Richardson is a SS with a small body-but that's OK. The guy we really need is the FS-we don't have the right guy there yet so we may just have to keep Darrion at FS

Halverson practiced on defense during the week before he got hurt at the end of the season. He was told he was going in on the next defensive series but got hurt first.

Sutton was a very good safety, but also played wide receiver, cornerback and even defensive end on occasion in high school. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he said something about running routes with Ben Hicks, which suggests that he expects to remain on offense.

Former secondary coach Derrick Odum, who put Bryan McCann, Sterling Moore, Richard Crawford, Chris Banjo and several others before he got to SMU into the NFL, said Shakiel Randolph was never fully healthy last year, but he (Odum) thinks Randolph will get a lot of looks from the NFL at either safety or cornerback. He said (I'm paraphrasing here) that Randolph has the athleticism, and obviously the size, and if he could master the footwork needed to play corner, every team in the NFL would give him a look.

You say that Sutton is running routes with Hicks which suggests he expects to remain on defense? Hope you mean offense or is Hicks working on interceptions?

Shakiel Randolph has played 3 years at SMU and all I see is "potential"-what I don't see is performance. He does bat a few balls away with his height. Made 17 tackles last year with his "big game" 4 tackles when SMU got blown out by NTSU. He has 1 career interception with zero return yards. I seriously think he "potentially" may be the most overblown SMU player in decades. Can't play CB and is always a liability in passing game-doesn't have NFL cover skills

I'm pretty sure the five year clock has expired for both of you. :)

I never spent any eligibility. I would be a RS-FR.

I think the clock stopped when I left school. I have my fifth year and I am ready to compete. Someone needs to tie my cleats though. I tend to pass out when I bend over.

How about re-enrollment?

The safeties got worked over in the defensive schemes because the LBs got eaten alive and there were always gaps. I wouldn't say Banjo ever dominated, and he is in the NFL now.

I don't think Randolph has the burst to play corner, and he doesn't look back for the ball and find the ball. When he does look, he slows down. So I don't think he is a corner naturally.

Randolph and D RIch, whether at safety or at the Star position, are going to shine under the new staff. Those guys make plays left and right at practice and are incredibly athletic. There is no reason for either of those players to not be big time at SMU.

Yeah, heard the same thing about 'practice' last year. Only problem was D Rich got burned as much as everyone else last year and didn't really stand out at all. With these being 2 of our 'best' it's time to hold our breathe and make DB's a top priority for the next class. Horace may be our actual best, but he only showed flashes toward the end of last year, also scary.

Don't see how this D is gonna be any different than last year's realistically. The primary improvement in the D will be the new offense staying on the field longer. Not much change or improvement in personnel.
