OT: Not signing NLI ├óΓé¼” future trend?
Seems this kid committed to sign with UCLA, then got bent when UCLA's defensive coordinator left. Now says his recruitment is open again, and whatever school he picks will not get an NLI from him - he says he'll just commit and enroll.

Some are saying this will change recruiting, that kids will start doing this and relying on handshake agreements with the coaches at their schools of choice.
But isn't the NLI part of the process that helps with the financial side of things? (I don't read enough of the rules on that kind of thing, but I gather some of you do.)

You can sign a financial agreement without signing a national letter of intent. Recruits started doing this a couple of years ago. Kind of old news regarding the financial agreement.

Its not common at all except for grey shirts or when a Senior High School recruit intends to enroll early like in the example below. I can't think of any top recruit that did this. Plus even those financial aid agreements are non-binding on the recruit-if they get a better deal they are not obligated to attend

All it's going to take is a few high-profile schools getting burned in the process before the powers tat be lobby to have this rule changed.

Since 5* (and some 4*) players are in such demand, schools be willing to hold a spot and wait on them. As for getting burned, a school will only lose if they pass on another player while waiting for a star to decide. However, the possibility of that exists under the current system as well.Junior wrote:All it's going to take is a few high-profile schools getting burned in the process before the powers tat be lobby to have this rule changed.

I'm failing go see how doing this leaves the student at an advantage?

because its becoming a pattern that a lot of assistant coaches (and even some Head Coaches) recruit a kid claiming that they will be the recruit's position coach and then the day after signing date they take a new job. Kid actually gets coached by someone he has no relationship with. Formation or vision for the recruit may even change. A Top 4 or 5 star can just wait until school starts to make sure this doesn't happen. I think its your typical "Me First" reaction by recruits choosing school for wrong reasons

Advantage: if your coach (head coach or position coach) leaves after you sign your NLI, you are forced to attend the school. By not signing the NLI, the player can defer his decision until he is sure that the school delivers on his promises.vielsiehorsepower wrote:I'm failing go see how doing this leaves the student at an advantage?
Disadvantage: if the kid is injured or gets sick (This year, a recruit got cancer shortly before signing day. Luckily, his school honored the commit.), he could end up SOL.

1. Correct, they remind kids many times they are choosing the school, not the coach. However it is the coach recruiting the kid, not the school.Stallion wrote:I think its your typical "Me First" reaction by recruits choosing school for wrong reasons
2. Don't coaches usually have a "Me First" approach as well? How many coaches put players' needs before their own?
