you gotta love this kids toughness. If he carries the ball 26 times he probably gets about 50-60 yards with extra effort and two tacklers wrapped all over him. He rarely goes down on the first hit. As many yards as he got today though I was generally disappointed that we didn't consistently knock Rice off the line and open up more holes. There were too many times where there was nothing there at all. Anyway it was good to see the two tight end formation with Romo under center and Martin farther back in the backfield. I think that needs to become a big staple of our offense as it was today and hopefully we can slip McKinney in there as well as a TE/FB. The running game was good today but there is definitely some room for improvement. If they do-watch out because Martin could put up some big numbers. BTW I think Martin also had about 18-20 yards taken away for penalties. McKinney was an excellent pass catcher out of the backfield in high school but we haven't seen that wrinkle yet. BTW that formation made Romo a more effective runner on a few occassions today too.

I agree, we should have been able to run between the tackles better. Rice SID said because of numerous injuries, Rice had to go to a three man front, instead of their normal four man front. Wow.....another punt blocked, with a couple of more close calls! Mercy! We clearly had the better athletes out there today, we should have beaten them a lot worse. The second half was a 7-7 deadlock, we must find the killer instinct. We scored 27 points, the lowest Rice has given up all year. For the ones that stayed to the end, that fourth quarter was painfull to watch. Rice looks kind of like Highland Park.... a bunch of smallish, not to fast white guy's. But hey, it was good to win! How 'bout that De Myron Martin? He is a stud!

Then again, they only scored 7, which is the fewest they've scored all year.

that is true and kudos to the entire defense but especially Haywood, DD Lee, Sturdivant, Jamey Harper and Justin Rogers for dominating on defense. Haywood had one of the better days for an SMU Defensive Lineman in a while. He beat his man like a drum all game long. We need some more JUCOs like this kid because he has been a significant reason for our defensive improvement.

Haywood should be even better next season, after a year with Coach Faucette! Boy that Hatfield keeps beating that "extra week" SMU had to prepare drum.

In the Houston Chronicle story (linked up on the homepage), Hatfield said something about how we prepared better with the extra week than we would have had we only had one week.

Ya' think? No kidding, Coach. (Maybe he thought we'd try to make things more fair by not practicing for a week?)

Martin was awesome (obviously). One of the most impressive things he did, I thought, was on his touchdown. He'd run the ball on most of the plays on that (long) drive. Yet when we got down to the 1-yard line, he showed patience, waiting for a gap, and then bursting through. Pretty mature play for a freshman.
