Question about those season ticket #s

Postby RGV Pony » Sun Nov 06, 2005 5:22 pm

After returning to my Chicago hotel room from Notre Dame Stadium, I promptly looked up ponyfans.com & DMN to read all about the SMU win over Rice.

Two things I'm wondering about. DMN says there are 4600 or so season ticket 'holders...' I'm guessing that like myself most people have more than just 1 season ticket. If that's the case, 4600 'holders' could equate to 13,800 season tickets, no? I'd just like a clarification as to whether that's tickets or holders.

Second, I swear remembering that most Cotton Bowl SMU games had 17-22k there. Am I remembering wrong? If not, where did all of those walk-ups come from?

Finally, DMN mentioned there had been concerns of late from "boosters and alumni." Does that mean us (pf.com posters)? I'd venture to guess we're the most representative of the group. If that's the case, it's a little late for Calvin to take notice of the board's [deleted]. On the other hand, my guess is it was finally Lamar Hunt's turn to [deleted], and he constitutes "boosters and alumni."

I was contacted by Calvin Watkins at the end of September/early October for some comments for an article he was writing about the state of SMU football. It was after I posted on this site the letter that I wrote to Turner about Copeland. After careful consideration, I declined.

So, yeah...Calvin Watkins reads this board.

I know for a fact Watkins reads this board. And he isn't refering to us when he is saying the "boosters".

...I heard the DMN was going to follow MrMustang1873 around and report on his Turner / Copeland confrontation(s). Photos, commentary, "man on the street" type reactions to his arse chewing(s)....can't wait, should be a good read.

Wait a minute, MrMustang6817, you rant and rave about being a big mad fan and chewing some FIRE Turner & Copeland Copeland "arse", but will not agree to speak with a newspaper reporter, about the state of football at SMU?? WOW!! Is the Dallas Observer more your speed? Like I have said from the beginning, you have got to be one of the strangest folks on this board, a real nut case. Long Live PeeWee Herman.

Declined? Why the hell would you decline? You come on here and rant and rave to the choir and when you have a chance to speak to the masses you DECLINE? You are not COMMITTED to the good of SMU football!

I am pretty sure there are about 5000 season tickets held - not 5000 season ticket holders. (I have 4) I heard Saturday that the 5000 season tickets is down from 10,000 at the opening of Ford. And from what I also hear from folks sitting around us, that will dwindle even more in the near future.

I don't think Saturday's game will have done anything to keep anyone in the fold. Even in a winning effort (Did we win or did RICE just lose?), the effort was boring and indifferent. If Saturday's game is indicative of what we can expect in the future, I don't really care much, at this point, if they play football except I would sure miss The Blvd. The exodus by the 'students' at half time, while fully expected, was shameful. They remind me of little elementary school girls at a bad dance recital.

The most respectable folks at SMU at present is the band and particularly the alumni band. What a great group.
Long live Thomas Sowell!

The alumni band was fantastic. I'm curious: if they're at every game anyway (they roam around the stands, playing periodically throughout the game), why can they not join the current SMU band in the stands? The band is great, but it sure would be nice to have more people in it, so they can fill up Ford with their sound, and maybe rattle a few windows across Mockingbird.

Is there any reason they don't sit in? Most of the music played is traditional stuff .... I would think they could hold their own.

Hey, Rice is awful, but we went out and beat them .... convincingly, I might add. And that was without our best performance, too. I'm not pushing for a national ranking just yet, but we were the better team, and we played like it.

Some members of the alumni band do sit-in and play in the stands. We have to be very careful. Not knowing and having an opportunity to rehearse all the music performed by the current Mustang Band can cause problems. We play on the traditional stuff, but have to lay out on the newer music.

One problem with the volumn is where the band is located in Ford. Sitting in the corner at the goal line causes the sound to go down the field instead of being directed at the press box side. This is a problem we are trying to correct.

The group that travels around and plays in the stands is the "Spirit" band. It is not the complete alumni band, but a smaller version. The "Spirit" band plays in the stands during the second quarter, while the Mustang Band is changeing into their halftime uniforms. This is just something to help fill the void.

Now that we have a new "dedicated" band director that is a Mustang Band alum, there are tremendous efforts being put forth to increase the size of the band. Mr. Don Hopkins knows the style, traditions and what the Mustang Band was and can be. He is dedicated to the current band and will make progress to increase the size. Believe me, he can and will get it done. But, 3 win seasons does not help the cause.
