More DMN commentsIn the lower thread someone said "it's all about selling papers". I dare anyone to convince me that replacing some lame article about recruiting for the UT Women's Basketball team with a story about the Mustang win would result in a loss of a single newspaper sale for the DMN last Sunday. That just isn't true. Not putting the SMU win on the front page IS because we are not BCS or Big XII, and we are not winning enough. And in MHO it is just plain nasty! I wrote the sports editor and he wrote back that when we start improving our won-loss records they will improve the coverage and it's location in the paper.

Re: More DMN commentsThat sounds reasonable to me. Wonder how much improvement he wants for us to qualify for the front page every week. I don't think we are there yet. Frankly, I think we have gotten fairly good coverage all things considered, plus our beat writer Calvin has done a good job.
Re: More DMN commentsThis is exactly the problem. We can not improve our win/loss record with out better recruiting. We can not improve our recruiting without better exposure, including media coverage. So we have created a perpetual, endless circle.
Since you received a reply, maybe you could inform the sports editor how this all works. We need the media's support as much a possible and that extra article starting on the front page and then being continued on page 6 would help soooooooo much. More mention of players names and stats. That is media coverage and support and we would love to have the local media support of all local D1 college sports. Yes, that includes the froggies and the meanies of NT. Just send 'da money.
This thread and the response of the DMN ignore the central point that has beenm mentioned before. SMU is a DALLAS school. The ONLY D1 school in Dallas. A responsible newspaper supports the people that support the city. UT and A&M schools do NOT support Dallas and could'nt care less about the city. Witness the pulling of the OK/UT game from Dallas year after next. And yet the DMN continues to cover them as if they were the home town team.
AND, I realize the numbers of granduates of those schools in Dallas outweigh SMU; still, there is such a thing as dancing with the guy that brung ya. We deserve more respect fomr the DMN than we get. They suck big time.
Actually, I disagree. By definition, a responsible newspaper reports on the goings-on at a local Div. I-A university in an objective manner. Of course, the DMN sponsorship signs all over Ford (scoreboard) and Moody nullify any mention of objective sports reporting.
now I see some of the same old people claiming that the DMN has some sort of duty to provide coverage so our recruiting wont suck. Many are the same old people who are quick to defend the athletic program at every turn. Once again-the DMN is not the cause of SMU's problems-a negligently run Athletic proram is -just deal with the facts. It is pure nonsense to blame the DMN for the handcuffs SMU placed on its own program. SMU is reaping what was sowed 16 years ago.
Ironically enoughThe SMU win was top of page 1 in the Austin (early) edition of the DMN sports section.
Both sides have valid arguments here in the broader scheme of things. SMU needs to win to get more coverage, but on the other hand the DMN often has puzzling choices given SMU's location in Dallas.
But, that said, this Sunday was particularly ridiculous. SMU DID WIN, it's homecoming game, no less. If you want to bury a loss on page 6, fine. But a homecoming win of the local Div. I university's team probably merits more than page 6, unless, of course, there is something more important in terms of timliness and reader appeal to bump it off. But that's not what bumped it off the front page this Sunday. Some article about UT women's basketball recruiting before the basketball season even starts bumped it off the front page. That is unacceptable. That is not a front page Sunday article AT ANY TIME in a Dallas newspaper, let alone during football season, let alone after a convincing homecoming win by the local school, unless there is some sort of weird pro-UT agenda at play. Period. Burying us on page 6 can sometimes be justified (it won't stop me from complaining), but it cannot be justified this Sunday.
well our Littl' Homecoming gathering of friends, family and relatives drew no more than 11,000 bodies. The NASCAR Event drew 190,000 on Sunday alone-right- Sounds like to me that SMU is getting MORE than its share of coverage as long as it got 1/19 th of the coverage NASCAR did.
Oh, come on Stallion, what football game between two private schools with a student population of 12,000 at best and minimal alumni interest and with the respective records of those playing in Ford on Sunday would draw even 20,000? Don't mention USC, Notre Dame, or BYU/ Miami to me because they all have more than 20,000 students alone. We did pretty well considering our records and the pitiful contribution of Rice. We need to be playing Rice for the CUSA Championship to even fill Ford. 190,000 at NASCAR, what a BS comparison. If we played Texas or A$M then we would fill it for Homecoming no matter our record. So let's just concentrate on winning and forget the attendance problem for a while. You are right that the DMN is not obligated to help our exposure, but they should. However, nothing lets that Sunday decision by the Sports Editor of the DMN off the hook in MHO.
It was Howard University's homecoming in DC last week. They lost to SC State, and they ended up on page 6 of the Washington Post which of course carried stories about all sorts of different things. Navy slaughtered Tulane for their homecoming and ended up on page 3, I think. Two local schools in DC. Being the local school doesn't earn you any props in the local paper unless you have a fan base to justify it.
The DMN gives SMU as much coverage as it warrants, perhaps even moreso. As Mr.Mustang's lovely bride discovered after her whine to the editor, SMU is one of only 3 schools that have their own beat writers. Tell me what SMU has done to deserve that kind of coverage?
DMN is probably one of the top 2 or 3 sports sections in the country...big time coverage from front to back...they owe us NOTHING!! Stop whinning and PLEASE, do not blame the DMN for our recruiting troubles.....this board gets more crazy every day. I would contend that MrMustang6173 getting in FIRE Turner's face and Copeland Copeland'
s kitchen on gameday, if witnessed by a recruit, would be more harmful to recruiting V. some precieved lack of coverage by the DMN.
