Basketball Revenue Since Moody Renovation?

Postby StallionsModelT » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:10 am

I know the renovation cost $47M but I don't think anyone could've imagined such a great first two years. Average attendance over 6,500 plus alcohol sales has got to be more than anyone in the AD could've imagined. Also, the TV deal with the AAC as compared to CUSA is night and day.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Indeed - but future season ticket prices have also been boosted to the point where some previously priced $1000 seats will be more than $10000 - they just added a zero. Hope they don't totally price out all the dedicated fans who had stuck with and supported the program throughout the lean years.
Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.

We have to gouge right now if we want to pursue the dangling carrot of P5. The new IPF, natatorium, golf center, etc. are not going to pay for themselves. The AD has made it clear they are going to give it everything they've got to get into a P5 conference. We need the revenue from basketball to float us for a while.

Even though it won't show up on a balance sheet, the school receives a lot of marketing value as the result of having a successful basketball team. My guess is that Basketball is highly profitable but there is still a large shortfall in the athletic budget. Men's basketball makes money but the other sports are just so expensive to maintain.

yep - we really need at least three teams in though to increase the odds we get a few games under the collective conference belt.

how does that work? How much does SMU get per AAC team playing in a NCAA tournament game? Also you don't get a higher percentage of the money if your the team that gets the credits? So UCONN winning the natty last year and they got the same amount of money as we did because of the sharing?

A NCAA tourney credit is worth about $1,700,000 and is paid over 6 years and is equally shared between the 11 basketball schools.

I agree. But it was nice cashing the Louisville and UConn checks the last couple years.

Yeah I know. I guess it means we finally made it if we are constantly carrying lesser teams and half the conference is counting on us to support them with some tournament money, I guess that is the feeling all the big time programs have. I'd rather be in that group than depending on other teams to win us some money.

It's the good part of being in a nice conference. The extra money from University Central Florida's BCS appearance sure didn't hurt either.
