I agree we never should've been in the situation but the refs absolutely blew the call. Everyone on the post game broadcast thought so too. The ref who made the call was perpendicular to the line of the shot and almost at half court. The ref behind the shot made no call because he could clearly see it was going to be an airball or have zero chance of going in. The director of officiating was on the broadcast and you could see he was clearly struggling to defend the call. IT WAS AN AWFUL CALL. THEY GAVE THEM 3 POINTS THAT DIRECTLY COST US THE GAME. I would be shocked if they don't allow a review on this sort of play in the future. Just a shame to lose this way; I would've been much less pissed if we'd lost had Alford drained the 3.
Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!

The head officiating guy they interview said they often change the rules based off things that happen during their tournament.

They'll change the rule going forward no doubt.

If you look at the overhead video it looks like it could be a goaltend

Yeah but a) it wasn't and b) irrespective of everything else was still horseshxt. If I beat someone's asx but was still a cool dude the previous 39 minutes 48 seconds do I still go to jail?

If you can look at that screenshot and still find a way to think that is goaltending then you've already made up your mind.

There is absolutely ZERO chance that ball is going to go in the basket.

You all decide.

Here is the rule straight from the NCAA rule book:

Art. 1. Goaltending shall have occurred when a defensive player touches
the ball during a field-goal try and EACH of the following conditions is met: a. The ball is in its downward flight; and
b. The entire ball is above the level of the ring and has the POSSIBILITY,
while in flight, of entering the basket and is not touching the
cylinder.

That ball had ZERO chance, while in flight, of entering the basket.

From that pic I'm not even sure that the ball would have hit the rim.

What have we always heard about fouls in the last minute of a close game. YOU HAD BETTER BE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE to make that call. To make the call with no recourse for replay in an era where we have multiple TV angles is criminal.

It is really hard as an SMU fan to accept this.

The ball looks like it was actually past the front of the rim in that picture.

Section 5. Dead Ball
Art. 1. The ball shall become dead or remain dead when:
a. Any goal is made.
b. It is apparent that the free throw will not be successful on a free throw for
a technical foul or a false double foul or a free throw that is to be followed
by another free throw.
c. A held ball occurs or the ball lodges between the backboard and the ring or
comes to rest on the flange.
d. An official blows the whistle except when the try is in flight.
e. Time expires for a half or extra period.
f. A foul is committed by a shooter's teammate before the ball is released for
a try for goal.
g. Any floor violation (Rules 9-3 through 9-14) occurs, there is basket
interference or goaltending (Rule 9-16) or there is a free-throw violation
by the free-thrower's team (Rule 9-1)

So this means when they called goaltending, it created a dead ball situation. The ability to correct a situation occurs when the mistake is made at a deadball AFTER the next dead ball period after the ball is properly put in play. Since the next dead ball period was the end of the game, we are technically still in the dead ball period where the call can be corrected. The rules specifically do not allow protests of games but this is not a protest, but a request for a correction under circumstances specifically called for in the rules.

I know it won't happen, but its BS. We should at least ask and point out that Yannick did NOT goaltend. We should make the request for his sake.

It was not goaltending. The rest made a bad call. It happens. Great season. Can't wait for next

Even if they could look at it, they wouldn't... why would they? They got the outcome they wanted.
