Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingI was sitting right behind the UCLA bench. Nobody in that section (mostly iowa state people) thought it was goaltending, which makes it even more incredible that the ref on that side of the court is who called it.
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingSo much to say. Yes, the call was awful and wrong and deprived us of a victory. But lets look at these factors: (1) 60% free throw shooting. (2) CC's turnover (why didn't he simply call time out when he got caught near the line). (3) YM had no business being in that position to try and swat it, he should have been looking for someone to block out (did anyone notice that UCLA rebounded that errant shot and probably would have tied the game anyway). (4) Nick got two good looks and missed. (5) No one could hit the broad side of a barn the first 12 minutes of the second half.
Yes, the refs blew the call which cost us the game, but the call should not have mattered. When you depend on a ref making the correct call, you usually lose the game. UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatinghe should have blocked out-but the UCLA guy only got the ball after Moreria's tip. If he blocks out and the ball misses the rim-the ball is likely going unexpectantly out of bounds

Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingYeah, yeah, blah blah blah,
So you say "When you depend on a ref making the correct call, you usually lose the game", So what if you depend on the refs to make the wrong call? Apparently THAT philosophy worked out pretty well for the other team. The refs should have grown some balls and reversed the call and given UCLA the ball. Yeah, I know not reviewable, but they knew they had blown it. Reverse the call and yeah they probably don't get to call another game this tourney. But I bet they don't get to work another game anyway as much as they botched it. Beat the hell out of anybody!
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
Yanick got shoved in the back by the UCLA player that was not called (one of about 6 terrible officiating decisions that went against SMU in the final 2:30 minutes of the game), honestly when the whistle first blew I thought they were calling a foul on the UCAL player because it was plain as day. I have a photo of the push (and more evidence as to why it was not goal tending but I don't know how to post a jpeg).
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingif he's blocking out-that UCLA call is more likely than when 2 guys are facing the shooter jumping for the ball. See but that's not Moreria's mindset. Moreria is always thinking about blocking the ball-----EVEN on a 3 point shot. You can't give the official that option. You don't see players try to block 3 point shots-WHY? Because generally they are blocking out their man. That has to be instinctive and that's not Moreria's mindset despite all the clear goaltends this year

Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingAnd that's the hardest thing to learn because your instinct is to watch the ball instead of looking for a body to block out. I played 3 in high school at 5'10". Necessity taught me how to do that. And once I learned it, I got a lot of rebounds.

Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
That was my immediate reaction. I thought Yanick got fouled and that was the call. Then the guy sitting in front of me said "Oh hell! They called goal tending!" We were shocked! Long live Inez Perez!
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
I'd like to think the one making the call will never work another game, ours or for our conference, or SMU in any situation but that's too much to expect. I don't know what, if any seminars or classes to get officials on the same page so far as rules interpretations are concerned, but our loss should become an example. The idea that the official most distant from the basket and with the worst angle so far a tracking the path of the ball made a non reviewable call, well it sucks. I like the idea, otherwise expressed, of a new MOB chant for airballs.
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingdespite the goaltending call, our best shooter still had 2 pretty good looks that could have won the game. For our team and our fans that invested in the trip to Louisville...I feel bad for all of you but also very appreciative of all of you
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
I am shocked Nic did not hit one of those - he has hit so many for us, I really expected him to nail the first one. Then he got a second clean look that he makes 9 of out 10 times. If anyone remembers, I think Johnny Fueller had a shot to win against Gtown after the Ewing tip in that 1984 game and missed. Horribly crushing feeling then as now. Such is SMU sports. Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiatingWe didn't get all the calls. Moving screens, pushing off, walks by the dozen.
But the refs didn't lose us the game. We lost it ourselves. But it was great to see us on that stage and with a great crowd there. The worst thing is that now that the season is over all we have to look forward to is sanctions, Larry Browns future, MK's grades, Nic's being courted by other programs Mustangs Abu!
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
Yeah. I can't wait for October when whatever is going to happen has happened. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Whatever you do, don't blame the officiating
Evidently you already know what is going to happen, LB retires. You cannot seem to post on any other subject. Tiresome. An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
