My suggestion is that you call your AD and suggest that UCLA set up a home and home with SMU starting this next year. I would love to see UCLA come to Moody - and I would be the first one purchasing an airline ticket to LAX to head to Pauley.

I'd be for that. Big Larry Brown fan. Not sure UCLA would go for it considering how Brown left and the aftermath but who knows, SMU is a program on the rise and we don't shy away from bigtime OOC games. Kentucky, No. Carolina and the Zags this year.

Teams don't want to play us. Especially at Moody. Indiana would not give us a Dallas game - but we do get the Zags and Michigan in here next year. Would love to get a Pac team on the schedule - and we have a sizeable SoCal alumni base that would show up in Westwood.

I can't imagine that any part of the UCLA administration that would have been around during the LB years is still actually around. Larry also is known to get away games in areas where our recruits are coming from and we have a good one coming in from SoCal - Corona Centennial (who chose SMU over offers from Cal, UCONN, Memphis, ... so you never know.

Check my other post after talking last night to guy whose officiated 30 plus years, worked Big 10 games, head of his association, etc. It was not this ref's call to make. It was not in his 1/3 area of responsibility, the guy who has baseline under basket is the primary, then the guy closest to ball or shot. That is how they are trained. That is what my uncle said was most puzzling to him about the call, this guy called it.

But refs are human. This video and others show Alford and the assistants motioning with their hands and screaming for goaltending and he happened to be standing right by their bench. He went with it, it happens. Still on us to play better.

My uncle said just this year they went over this rule and were told unless sure ball had a chance to go in to let the players decide the game. He said as an official what happened is what no official wants to happen, to directly impact outcome of the game. He said did not know why that guy decided to make the call unless 100% sure.

But with 64 plus games they have to try and find officials from all over. I'm sure it would be easy to check this guys credentials on-line or somewhere to see what his experience was. If newer official I can see the bench influencing his call in heat of the moment. But again this one play not entire reason for loss.

While the play is not video reviewable, why didn't the other two refs decide to overrule him or better yet, check the video to ensure the time on the clock was right and oh wait, did I just see that wasn't a goal tend. I think you can change a ruling if you are checking a reviewable item. Refs just didn't want to show up their guy. I hope he doesn't work another tournament game ever.

They did review to see if it was a 2 or a 3.

I thought the guy who called it was the white guy with spiky hair - but I see it was the taller of the two black refs. He was in the third best position to make that call. Simply unbelievable. You can see the baseline ref glance over to him with a quick WTF look.

Can we get a photo of that guy posted? Just want to make sure we know when he comes to Moody again.

You have a valid concern. At the 9:48 mark Tony Parker took a hook shot that the SMU defender seems to clearly hit on its way down. There was no call. A friend at the game told me that the UCLA staff was all over the refs at the next time out, though no replay was shown on T.V. It's possible that non-call and reaction plus the ref being near the UCLA bench on the controversial play played into his call consciously or subconsciously.

If SMU wanted a series, it may be doable. UCLA spent a lot of money recently revamping Pauley Pavilion and it hasn't been selling out. UCLA BB fans are spoiled. For example, they only hang National Championship banners in Pauley. You won't find a conference championship or even one from any of the 17 Final Fours. Just the 11 National Championship banners.

The return of Larry Brown and the "goaltending" controversy would sell tickets in L.A. IMO. That, plus UCLA likes to recruit in Texas and I'm sure SMU wants Southern California exposure. You should definitively put that in the suggestion box.

We are basically now the Texas University of LA anyway, since so many of the normal Californians want their kids to be educated in a non-communist environment. I think it is up to 30% of our student body now from Southern California. Might as well get them on the schedule so we can get a home game in LA.

Amazing that the two refs with very good angles did not call it, and the one who absolutely would not be able to tell if it was goaltending from his angle is the one that called it. Not sure if the ref under the basket is supposed to focus more on the pushing underneath. The thing that is still incredible to me is not that the one guy called it, but that the 3 did not huddle up and try to get it right.
It would be nice if the commentators on all the channels would actually learn the goaltending rule - a few know it, most don't.
