This is a great thread. Exactly the conversation I was hoping to have about the future of the program. I'm learning a lot. I'm no expert. . .just a fan. . .so I'm very interested in the comments of those who know more than I do. With that, I have a comment and few questions:

Comment:

From my admittedly amateur perspective, I like where the program is right now. . .but I'm not wildly, madly in love with where it is. We definitely got a huge shot in the arm with LB's hire, some excellent transfers, and then some big recruiting wins with KF and Mudiay. But I kind of see that momentum bleeding away. This team was certainly good enough to win the AAC, which is awesome. Don't get me wrong. But we are not good enough right now to run with the top P-5 programs. Where would we have ended up in the ACC this season for example. Maybe in the Miami, NC State, Syracuse range? Maybe lower than that? But certainly not in the top 5 of the conference. From what I've seen of Duke, UNC, Maryland, ND, and Louisville, they would have handled us easily this season. So I want to see us take the next step and bring in the type of kids that can take us on a deep run in the tourney and win some big non-conference games. I think we can get there, but we're not there right now as a program.

Having said that, I think the university and the athletic dept are really serious this time and want to build that kind of program. So that's comforting. I just hope BB doesn't get lost in the shuffle as we pour resources into building up football. But I Iove what Turner and Hart have done the past few years with the program.

Questions:

1. I saw a comment about needing our 3rd RC in the last 2 years. This is definitely troublesome. We lost Howard and Maligi. So where do we go from here? Is there a sense that LB is working hard to bring in another stud? I'm worried about the lack of news on the recruiting front for next year. Other than Carter, I'm not hearing of anyone that we are really on. Am I wrong?

2. I'd like to explore the comment about Jank not being the guy if LB goes. That's interesting to me. Why do some on here think that?

3. What do y'all think needs to happen for the program to take the next step and be able to compete with the big boys? Is it just a matter of keeping things going. . .or does there need to be a change?

My thanks to anyone who wants to take a shot at any of those questions.

1) RC's are notorious job hoppers. We do need another good one and need to pay up - like right now. Concern level 1- 10 = 7
2) Don think LB is going anywhere but a bit concerned about his health. He is also spending a lot of time talking about how great Jank is - which means he is trying to keep him happy and build him up with future bosses - I would guess we have two years with LB. I don't know why some folks say he is not the guy. If we had hired him and there was no LB we would have all been thrilled. That said - we are committed to the top echelon - so if he is not the guy there will be immediate rehire. concern level - 5
3) See number 1 above. that is the issue at hand. Have to get multiple guys in all the gyms in the country to get our draw. I have no concern that those in charge don't "get it".

That's a really interesting point. Our fan base will support a top notch program financially. This is true. For a while at least. But we don't have the fan base of a top program. SMU basketball is not a priority to its fans. They come late, they don't travel and they don't use the seats they brag about. We sold out moody but for most of the year there were no more than 5000 butts in seats. If the team is not (a) winning and (b) playing name opposition our fans don't really care. It's a world better than it was but its hard to pick whether SMU or the fans are more superficially dedicated to the other.

Of course this doesn't apply to 90% of he posters on this board who have been supporters of the program for years.

Given the headaches DFW players have caused, is this really the worst thing?

I'm not sweating, so long as we don't fill Ulric's spot w/a local recruiter. Grab someone who owns another town

Can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's because I saw his teams play when he was head coach at North Texas, and they were awful. I know he did better at Illinois State, but his best year there would still be a step backward from last season's NIT run. SMU is paying LB alot of money, and it's paid dividends, because we have been living off his name and rep for the last 3 years, but that's lost when he leaves, and Jankovich doesn't come close to replacing it. SMU pays LB ALOT of money, if the school is willing to pay that salary to the next coach, we should be able to find someone better.

hoopmanx- when you refer to players deciding their future with agents circling, is that in reference to MK, or Keith?

The answer is probably: "Yes."

think MK is going to be the x-factor next year. I could stomach losing keith much easier. Obviously we hope our recruits and transfers pan out to be everything we thought they could be, but that's rarely the case.

So let's not publicly suggest an important player from smu might be in contact with an agent (even if it is through an intermediary). This isn't Kentucky, ncaa probsbly won't let things like that slide at smu.
