Lammons Tallies 16th Singles Win Of The Spring

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU junior Nate Lammons picked up his team-leading 16th singles win of the spring, but the Mustangs ultimately fell to Dartmouth, 4-1, in the first outdoor dual match at the SMU Tennis Complex on Tuesday evening.

Lammons improved his spring singles record to 13-3, recording a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Diego Pedraza at the No. 4 position. Lammons' win was his eighth in his last nine matches and his fourth against players from ranked teams.

Lammons and doubles partner Arkadijs Slobodkins remained perfect this season with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 slot over Ciro Riccardi and Brendan Tannenbaum. The duo is now 12-0 this spring.

Dartmouth (9-6) took the opening doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions, taking a 1-0 match lead into singles play. Lammons' singles win knotted the score at 1-1, but his victory would be lone point for SMU (15-5) on the night.

Tannenbaum tallied a straight-set win at No. 6 to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead. SMU sophomore Markus Kerner, playing at No. 1 singles, faced No. 86 Dovydas Sakinis. After dropping the first set 6-4, Kerner bounced back to quickly win the second set, 6-2. Kerner fell down 5-2 in the third set, but picked up a break and added a point on his next serve to bring the score to 5-4. Sakinis would close it out, however, giving Dartmouth the 3-1 lead.

Riccardi clinched the 4-1 win for Dartmouth with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Samm Butler. Senior Arturs Kazijevs and No. 91 Chris Kipouras each won a set before their match was called, as did Slobodkins and Max Schmidt at No. 5.

The match was the first-ever dual match played in the outdoor Turpin Stadium at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU will host UT Arlington at 6 p.m. CT on March 31.
