got a note in my mailbox that SMU got a commitment from one of those African sounding kids mentioned the other day named Nyam? or something. I no longer get Scout though so if someone does check it out.

No, I haven't been to either scrimmage.

I am becoming concerned that we are signing athletes - not basketball players. That might be ok if Tubbs and his coaches had a track record of developing skills in players. I didn't see us really develop the basketball skills of players during Tubbs first tenure here. Maybe I am knee-jerking - I hope that I am..................................

Hey Stampede,

You haven't been concerned about anything for the past 20 years. Meanwhile, because of sunshiners like you who aren't concerned about anything, we continue the downward spiral in both major sports. The rest of us are concerned because SMU is a joke in the revenue sports.

Give us another "stay tuned" good news is coming posts! When is it coming? Answer- It ain't!!!!

Tell us how Doak Walker won the Heisman 57 years ago.

I believe that is a very legitimate concern. I don’t think we can judge Tubbs yet, it is way too early, but SMU's track record of developing basketball players over the last decade is abysmal.

First, let me say that I am not a big fan of the "all-athelete teams". The trend of just having a ton of athletes who can't shoot but athletically keep teams in the game. I believe that most NCAA coaches overreacted to a couple of upsets about 10 years ago in the big dance after some teams stocked with athletes beat a couple of big name programs. It has made the game a lot uglier.

That said, however, I do believe that the athleticism on the basketball team, especially in the front court, needs to be upgraded. If we aren't going to be all that tall down low, and we aren't going to develop an offense to feed those guys in the post, then I would much rather have some athletic players who can defend the lane and get rebounds than have some guys in there who can shoot but aren't going to rebound or block shots especially well.

So, if we can find some athletic big guys, I am all for it. It's guards and small forwards who are athletic but can't shoot that drive me nuts. Poerner was successful at SMU because we got him the ball and let him shoot. If we ran that type of system, the Rack might fit in better, and Castro would have had more of a consistant impact. But our team is oriented around guard play, and if that is the system, we need guys who are going to be able to compete athletically for rebounds and also be a threat in the middle defensively so that the guards can be more aggressive and go for steals.

here is what the Scout article says about him

Headed to SMU
by Jeff Goodman of Scout.com, November 15, 2005 at 8:48am ET

Menghe Nyam Profile

Menghe (Papi) Nyam, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound senior forward at New Hampton (N.H.) from Cameroon, signed with SMU on Monday.

``Papi has improved tremendously," New Hampton coach Jamie Arsenault coach. "He continues to be a very good slasher and his outside shot has gotten better."

Nyam chose SMU over Southern Mississippi and Loyola-Illinois.

``He liked the whole package," Arsenault said.

That one quote says it all. He is a slasher whose outside shot has gotten better. We don't need somene "whose shot has gotten better". I would love to see the definition of that. Does that mean he can now hit 3 out of 10 jumpers from 15 feet? I read it to say that we have another guy who can dunk it with the best of them and then brick his jump shot.

Dude, I'm sorry you are so down on Tubbs' recruitig efforts. Frankly, I think he's done an amazing job of even having us on the radar of a lot of top-tier local talent with what SMU has given him to work with. These guys he's signing may not be McD's all americans, but I don't think you can call them a bunch of chumps either without ever having seen a minute played.

Who Tubbs? of Nyam? Im pretty sure Tubbs could handle himself pretty well, honestly him and Bill Self should have a fist fight for Arthur.

Warning Warning Sunshine Alert Sunshine Alert

How many times have I heard that argument on the football board, simply replace ‘McD all Americans’ with ‘UT/OU recruits’.

How about this JT, we sign players with offers from Top 60 programs…not Southern Mississippi and Loyola-Illinois.

shouldn't we at least HOPE for the type of players Tubbs helped get as an assistant under DeMent like Sasser, Ross, Davis, Hancock, Simpson, Hopkins and others? And JTStang-believe me we have always had our foot in the door with top metroplex and Texas players during the last 10 years(the "handgrenade theory")-admitedly partly due to Tubbs. Yes Moody has aged 10 more years but Tubbs is going to have to overcome that or else we are just wasting our time talking about what could or might be. My concern is that Tubbs is bringing in players who are definitely a rung below the players listed above-and we are into his 3rd recruiting year

I have conceded on a number of occasions that I am about the biggest Tubbs apologist there is, so you sunshiner alert is well taken, if a little over-emphatic.

However you anology to the problems with the football program are ridiculous, as there have been no Darrell Arthur-caliber football players sniffing around the hilltop in decades. If you want to be down on hoops, fine, that is completely understandable given its recent lack of success. But please, do yourself a favor, and avoid cheapening your credibility by comparing the basketball and football situations, as they are night and day. I see basketball moving in a positive direction, albeit slowly, while football continues to founder.
