And JTStang-believe me we have always had our foot in the door with top metroplex and Texas players during the last 10 years(the "handgrenade theory")-admitedly partly due to Tubbs. Yes Moody has aged 10 more years but Tubbs is going to have to overcome that or else we are just wasting our time talking about what could or might be. My concern is that Tubbs is bringing in players who are definitely a rung below the players listed above-and we are into his 3rd recruiting year

Just bear with him, it would seem turning around a hoops program is easier than say turning around a football program by sheer numbers. And I firmly believe that you can TEACH in college basketball and make any players better. As an example, last year we played better defense than we had in any season I can remember under the prior coach, simply because it was emphasized. And we had a lot of the same players as before. All the skills, ballhandling, shooting, etc. can improve with work, and I think Tubbs knows that. On a related note, I'd be spectacularly impressed and give him a lifetime contract on the spot if he could make this team shoot 80% from the line this year.

JT, I judge our programs on their ability to compete for conference championships and by that guage BOTH programs stink, have stunk for quite a while and show no hope of competing for championships anytime soon.

I also realize that turning around a BB program is a lot easier than FB...but dosen't it frustrate you that we have not competed for a FB or BB championship since the SWC days?

And take a closer look at last years' BB record. It was a losing one against D1-A teams with the average ranking of the opponents we defeated a whopping 219.

It seems to me that in the days of the WAC 16, we were very competitive in a pretty decent basketball conference with Tulsa, Utah, UNLV and BYU in the conference. We didn't win the conference, but were usually in and around the top half. After that conference split, we ended up in the disjointed WAC 10 which hurt recruiting in a big way. Right now any recruit who hears from a Big East or ACC school will take a long look at them. After that the Big Ten and Big XII have to interest some of them. After that it is a school by school thing. If we can build up CUSA and get some TV coverage of the conference regionally, it would really go a long way to building our recruiting. I would love to see SMU, UH, Rice, Tulane, UTEP and Tulsa on a game of the week every week in the SW. That is why the ACC grew. Every rainy Saturday afternoon, the Jefferson-Pilot ACC game of the week came on with Bones McKinney or Billy Packer doing analysis.

ES,

Our overall WAC BB record was under .500.

In not one single year did we really 'compete' for a WAC championship.

Also we were 6-9 lifetime in the WAC tourneys.

whoever said Tubbs is in his 3rd recruiting year is basically wrong, unless you consider being hired in late March sufficient time to constitute a valid recruiting year. He is effectively beginning his 2nd recruiting year.

He signed Ike late in that spring he was hired. Not a good signing if you ask me, but I'll excuse that one because what did you expect him to do that late in the season. He had to take a flyer on someone. He signed a juco trying to find some immediate help I'd guess.

In his second recruiting year, he signed Dez Willingham, Bamba Fall, Brian Morris, Matt Williams and Brian Epps. Dez is a player and a 4 star local in high school, and Fall and Morris have more potential at big man than I have seen around here in awhile. Epps and Williams can shoot it, better pure shooters than anyone I can think of in a while. So Friar, I take exception to the notion that he is just stockpiling athletes as opposed to pieces of a complete basketball team. Where do you get this athlete theory?

Now Tubbs signs Nyem. I admit I'm not excited about this guy. I'm not down on him either. I don't care what you think of Southern Miss historically, Larry Eustacy knows a little about recruting talent. I do think it is important for Tubbs to get a bigger impact player with the second scholarship he has to offer, the one he currently hopes Arthur somehow accepts. If he doesnt, I guess you all can go ahead and fire him and get some spare second assistant from Michigan State or somewhere in here.
