game was over after A&M's 2nd series when Russ Washington took Kubiak out the game (and the season) with a vicious sack. SMU 47-9

Interesting to hear vern try to cover for the attendance. The upper end zone were clearly empty and not likely to change.. And he says "not quite 60,000 here yet... Probably stuck in traffic"... Still would love those crowds today

I remember the vast majority of SMU fans leaving very early and there were still 40,000 in the stands late.

Much more worried about "modern day" than what happened 30+ years ago.

Just trying to see how we compared back then. Nowadays it seems everyone likes to point out attendance this period and 30k as the "peak" SMU capacity attendance when nowadays I think that is not valid. Toad and Bear probably did not get 30k themselves.

That is what people who are not willing to deal with the truth tell you. They cheerlead in their comments. SMU in down years gets far fewer fans to games than TCU and Baylor in down years and vice-versa in winning years. This is especially true if you discount the Mustang Mania padding of crowds from 1978-1980 of which I was intimately involved at the time. I have been to every SMU/Baylor game and every SMU/TCU game in 45 years. In reality, I'd be surprised if SMU had 30,000 of their own fans at the 1982 Cotton Bowl down the street which wasn't close to a sellout. TCU took almost that much to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and about 20,000 to the Fiesta Bowl

My dad played on the 1959 Air Force Cotton Bowl team, that needed up tying TCU 0-0 in the game. They were each given an allotment of tickets, and being broke cadets, all sold them to have some beer money. He said that everyone in Dallas kept telling him that they were lucky they were playing TCU because they could get some decent money for them, but if SMU had been playing, they would have been able to get a lot more money. He heard it over and over.

I guess the 60's and the rise of the Cowboys is where it all went wrong for Dallas fandom.

So do you believe there is a ceiling to the amount of fans SMU could attract in the future? Is it the small enrollment? Alumni base? Pro sports? Dallas?
