The spot where the tennis center is probably could have handled a full sized, state of the art IPF. Just doing some basic cutting and pasting on Google Maps shows that a full sized football field would fit in that oddly shaped space with what looks like enough room to spare to include all the other amenities necessary to have a first class football facility on that side of Mockingbird... in fact, it probably could have been done in a way that would have allowed outdoor practice fields, as well.

A full football field covers 57,600 square feet (360 feet by 160 feet). To include 10 feet of space on each sideline would push the space covered to about 65,000 square feet.
Most of the newer IPF's are in the 75,000+ sf range (Florida, tamu, etc). 1) I think Westcott is the only site large enough for a 120 yard facility with amenities. 2) looking at Westcott's size, I doubt that any site on campus is big enough for a soccer/track stadium.

75,000 seems to be the size when it's just an IPF with some basic amenities in it. Ultimately, the size of the facility is dictated by the existing football facilities and, obviously, available space. My personal feeling is that SMU actually needs something more substantial than just the standard (really nice) barn with a football field inside it... we need a football only weight room, an athletic dining facility, etc and I'm not sure where those things could be placed without including them in the IPF plan.

When's the next Straight from the Hart where he'll tell us there are no plans for an ipf?

The SMU IPF is going to be over the top and the annoucement is coming soon. As far as the size of it, take into account the existing footprint of westcott and the track and take some or all of the freshman parking lot.

If it is awesome, that would be awesome (really). If they allow enough space to put a legit track facility in the IPF, we would be the only indoor track in the DFW area (I think). That would allow SMU to host indoor meets and get every football/track recruit in the region on campus.

I meant a legit indoor track. HS kids travel hundreds of miles to race on UH's crappy 200m indoor track.

I think what he is saying is that indoor tracks are not, as a matter of practice, the same size as an outdoor track. Or are you saying even then it won't be 200m?
