ESPN Gameday lists PB as #1 to replace Snyder

Postby BRStang » Sat Nov 19, 2005 11:17 am

Sorry, but I think this deserves its own thread...

This morning, Bennett was listed on the TOP of the list shown on ESPN to replace Snyder at K-State.

Herbstreit actually said Bennett was his FIRST CHOICE.

Am I missing something, here?

I seriously doubt it. I don't know who's going to make the decision at K-State .... the AD, Snyder (is he the AD?), the university president, the governor, etc. Whoever it is has an opinion of Coach Bennett -- good, bad .... whatever. And I'm sure because Coach Bennett and Snyder are tight, I bet Coach Bennett gets a call. They can say "he's one of our own, he's a Snyder disciple, he's part of the K-State family." But whether he's as good as his current record, or whether he turns out to be the next Bobby Bowden after more talent arrives doesn't matter -- I can't see K-State announcing to its fans that they hired a guy with Coach Bennett's current record. If they hire someone else for a few years, and Coach Bennett wins here during those years, I would think he would be the sentimental favorite for the NEXT time the K-State job is open. I like Coach Bennett and I think he's going to get it turned here. But I think his record at SMU -- whether it's because of him, because of the players or because the moon didn't align properly with the stars -- will hold him back from strong consideration at Kansas State.

And I'm glad, because I want him to finish what he's starting here.

I agree with Corso. K State couldn't make an announcement like that. Phil's favorites teams are probably A&M, K State and SMU.

I would not be shocked to see Bennett seriously considered for that job. He's well known to everyone up there and respresents an opportunity for KSU to have some "continuity" in their program. Say what you will about Bennett, but he's an intense guy who brings a high energy level and infectious enthusiasm and given the advantages of recruiting to KSU vs SMU, I would not be surprised to see him do very well there.

If SMU could beat Houston today, it would certainly add to his resume. Can't say that I'd blame him for bailing on SMU if the opportunity arose.

For what it's worth: I stopped by Mustang Barbers today (where I get my haircut and boots shined) and heard from one of the folks there that 'talk on The Hilltop' is that GENE STALLINGS wants the job IF Phil gets the job at Kansas State. And that there are plans to get Copeland out.

Like I said...for what it's worth.

....boy, Phil McAlister is ALWAYS good for a few hilltop rumors. I was over at the Piggly Wiggly on Thursday, they were having a special on peaches, and I over heard the assistant manager of produce comment that Lou Holtz was going to be our AD AND head Coach.....like I said, just a rumor from a produce mgr....

Gives a good haircut, though. ;)
Hey, Hixson...I hear the produce and rumors are better at Tom Thumb. ;)

everyone is having fun with this right now, but if SMU pulls off the win against UTEP and is crowned the Texas State Division I-A II champion next week, none of us should be shocked to see KSU suddenly ask for permission to talk to Bennett.

If Snyder has anything to say about who will succeed him, I would not rule Bennett out

I believe Gene Stallings is over 70 years old. I remember when he got the A&M job and beat Alabama in 1969 Cotton Bowl he was the youngest Division 1A Coach in America at something like 36-that was 36 years ago.

I bet they ask permission, if only as a gesture by Snyder to generate a little buzz for his friend (Coach Bennett). But Corso is dead-on with this .... as much as he's "part of the KSU family," they couldn't sell this to the K-State faithful. Next time the job's open .... maybe. But not now.
