We already have two primary colors in our uniforms, red and blue. Adding white and black to that just looks like a mess, too much going on. If they had redesigned the helmet and pants as well, it may have worked a lot better. Not to mention, June wanted to do it "just because" and explained it as "honoring our opponents"...wtf? That irked a lot of people.

Most schools have just one main color, so they can mix it around with grey, black, white, etc and it all looks decent.

It was just an ugly jersey. If you go black you need black pants also. And no red and white stripes. Like the previous poster said, the combination was horrible.
