So many things have to go our way for that to happen. But I do think there will be an additional "weeding out" of G5 programs and the creation of a truly national 6th conference will emerge. That is probably the most likely destination. If all the players can get on the same page it could be a really fun and competitive conference.
West - SDSU, BYU, Boise State, Colorado State, SMU, Houston
East - Cincinnati, Memphis, UCF, USF, UConn, Temple
You have the makings of a truly elite basketball conference and several of the top G5 football conferences in some major media markets. I've heard the concerns over CA public school budgets but I do think you need a CA school to keep the western schools like BYU, Boise, and CSU happy.
SDSU and Boise St. already bailed on basically that exact conference.

SDSU absolutely did not bail on us and waited to the very last minute they still want to join our conference

There will a combination of the MWC/AAC schools that will become the "6th" conference. Whether its the American gobbling up the best of the MWC or the forming of an entirely new conference it will happen to ensure that the "best of the rest" are associated with like-minded programs who are fully committed financially to competing with the P5. Whether that's 10, 12, or 14 is the question and I'm sure ESPN will be the one to determine who those schools will be based on TV market, brand recognition, etc. Honestly, wouldn't this conference, in some years, be as good or better than the ACC or the old Big East?

You could have conference games from 10AM CST to midnight with some really intriguing matchups in some major TV markets. I would think that conference would command a very lucrative TV contract relative to the one we have now in The American. I would certainly welcome an SMU schedule like this in the future:
TCU UNT Baylor/Tech/OK State D1AA SDSU UCF BYU Houston Boise State Temple Colorado State Memphis
That ain't bad at all.
Back off Warchild seriously.

We might have to schedule 3 or 4 P5s out of con to even get a look at getting ranked in the top 6 by the committee

A schedule of TCU, Texas Tech, Boise State, BYU, UCF, Houston, and Cincinnati is nothing to be ashamed of. That would represent as strong a schedule as we've had since the SWC.

Well, for you, the conference you make up and the whole P5 invitation. You would really put SMU with a school as bad as BYU and then Boise State and San Diego State (goin' West). Y'all have to know that the SEC schools are gettin' $31.2 million now just leaving others farther behind.

Yeah what crazy person would actually want SMU to be in the same conference as BYU and Boise State (which was the original plan for The American along with SDSU and Houston).
It'll happen. And likely sooner than later once some of the smaller programs start to see the financial writing on the wall. It behooves the G5 programs with the financial means to band together and eliminate the dead weight to create the best conference that has a shot at the playoff. Now I fully expect the playoff format to increase to 8 teams but that could be 5 years down the road for all we know now. There will be a 6th conference that encompasses the best G5 programs from coast to coast and SMU will be a part of it barring a P5 invitation.

You're drunk. It's one of the topics of G5 programs how they are getting farther behind and can't compete. That is some of the things I'm hearing from other guys from other programs.

Maybe it will happen. It didn't happen last time. I would never have anything to do with that one school though because of history and experiences that other programs have had with them.
