I wonder if we backed away due to some other stuff about to happen. That just makes no sense whatsoever other than that.

Since when do 18 year old boys make rational, well-reasoned decisions that make sense to everyone?
He may be chasing a girl. He may have just liked Texas State better. May have a connection with someone on their staff. He may have flipped a coin.
But saying that because he committed to someone else means we must have backed off is silly. I'm as excited as anyone about a new era for SMU football, but we're a LONG way away from getting any recruit we choose.
Stallion doesn't think I'm a stinkin' genius anymore.

Of course we aren't going to get any recruit we choose. We should just get any recruit that comes down between SMU and Texas friggin state.
I know 18 yr olds are irrational - but that doesn't mean you cant point out that the decision is not a good one, and was in fact irrational - unless we backed away due to grades or other commitments we have been told we are getting. That does happen, especially now that we have an actual recruiting staff.

The challenge with your logic is that it's dependent on a hierarchy: SMU > Tx State therefore SMU should win all recruiting battles with Tx State. The flip side is that we're all depending on Coach Morris to upend said hierarchy: OU > SMU, but SMU beats OU for a kid. I for one have no problem losing the occasional kid to a "lesser program" if it means we're beating out "better programs", too. You win some you lose some. Texas is a big state.

What the hell is a Texas State?
"We're not a hurry-up no-huddle offense, we're a hurry-up no-huddle football team and program. It's gonna start with our secretaries, its gonna resonate with maintenance department, everyone, they're gonna understand what 'tempo' is all about."

A transcendental state of being in which you suddenly realize you're better than everyone else in any measurable statistic and as a reflection of such you begin wearing wranglers, a cowboy hat, riding a horse to your job at the oil field, and playing country music on an acoustic guitar. You know, Texas stuff.

Yup. He's also from Odessa, so it's entirely plausible that he might not like a big city like Dallas and was more comfortable in a smaller town. Also don't forget that they did just have a corner drafted in the 3rd round in May; nice selling point.

He did not just pick Texas State over SMU. He had other BCS offers as well. It happens. No big deal.
