Re: 17 commits - 2.18 avg stars
Some of these guys may have their stars adjusted before they are actually a mustang!
But even with that said if you look at some of these guys film they are at least D1A body types from a high school body perspective! This is already a good sign hopefully the Strength Coach and earn his money and help develop these guys to further fill out their frames and add the speed needed to play at this level from that point it will be on the coaches to utilize these players the right way!
We all must keep in mind that the stars are adjustable and its not about stars seeing how this is the case. If you believe in the coaching staff you have got to trust their eye. A two star player commits to UT his rating is then changed to 4 stars just because UT offers him where as if he commits to SMU it stays at two this is the exact same player just the politics of this business.
I know all this to be very true from both a players perspective and also an coaches perspective as well the recruiting game is a dirty business, coaches call friends of recruiting services to change ratings on players to help them out.
Saying all this to say be patient with the staff and see in a few years once these players start playing how good the class really is if it turns out to be a good class then you can gain a trust for the staffs recruiting eye.
I don't want to be miss understood I do think that stars have some value but just trying to give the back story on things I know to be true! 5 Stars blue chippers are very hard to come by def for a school that hadn't been winning you have go to compare only to our conference!

correct-I doubt you see the widespread upgrades on Rivals like in the inflated grade years back a few years ago BUT one of those June Jones classes had 8-9 kids upgraded from 2 stars to 3 stars in a single class. Rivals has severely tightened its grading scale in the last 3 years or so

You need to look at scout, rivals and 247 ratings to get a better idea as well as the offers and video. It is time consuming, but gives you an idea of the kind of kids SMU is signing. It is definitely an upgrade from what has been recruited by previous staffs.

"previous staffs", plural...mostly referring to Bennett and previous coaches since there was a recruiting moratorium between PB and CM.PonySnob wrote:Recruiting by the previous staff?Pony Boss wrote:You need to look at scout, rivals and 247 ratings to get a better idea as well as the offers and video. Phil Bennett didn't recruit like this-he didn't canvass the state early, blitz every high school in the state and get offers out early. This is first coaching staff in 30 years that knows what they are doing in recruiting.

Re: 17 commits - 2.18 avg stars
Of note- for better or worse, Morris and co. will have to absolutely own this class. They busted their rears, canvassed the state, pushed hard, and locked down 17 (!) kids they want and believe in to succeed here. Sure, there have been misses, but this isn't the case of grabbing as much low-hanging, rotten fruit as quickly as possible (like Bennett and June in their last years). They've properly played the recruiting game with kids who, well, would maybe be better off at some other school.
So, aside from the objective fact that this class has approx. 105 other D-1 offers seven months before signing day, it's full of kids this staff absolutely, wholeheartedly wants and is glad to have. Worth keeping in mind whenever mid-February rolls around.

Complete waste of time comparing apples and oranges in July.
The key to the whole class is Moore. Very underrated and potential program changer. If he flips when the bigger P5's come calling, the class takes a serious downgrade.

We really need a few more threads comparing previous staffs' recruiting efforts to the current one. We haven't fully explored whether Cavan or Bennett or Jones or Morris is most effective in recruiting on the Thursday after the 2nd Monday in months when there is a blue moon.

I think we can trim the decision set from 4 to 3 without a lot of work

Nice implication that it's only family ties. Care to tell me what relative got Rivals 4-Star Collin Wilder yesterday?mrydel wrote:First Herman is not that far ahead of us when you discount the highly rated recruits he got due to family ties. That happens.

I would rather not. If you cannot do it yourself you need to learn how.
