There are 45 lives at risk after a decision by SMU's Emergency Operations Committee proceeded to rid the campus of a longstanding, well-managed, cat program, the SMU Feral Cat Group.
Yesterday, August 6th, 2015, without counsel or any communication with the program, the committee proceeded to remove the cat’s food and change the locks to the Feral Cat Group's supply room, depriving us access to provide nutrition and water to refill the cat’s bowls.
Today, August 7, 2015, without professional consideration or advice, the EOC has proceeded to inhumanely trap the 45 cats on campus using Terminix, a pest management company, in 100 degree weather. This is cruelty.
To demonstrate the unprofessional and unreasonable plan of the EOC, I point to the procedural model that they have provided us with, which considers shooting an effective and humane method of cat management. I believe that the entire Dallas community does not believe that this is a method of feral cat management, but an inhumane and barbaric way to temporarily solve a cat population issue. So why at SMU, where we should be setting the highest standard of humanity, would we revert to using material written by people who truly believe this is an appropriate method of feral control? We should always be at the forefront of humanity.
We need to end this unreasonable and inhumane process now!
The SMU Feral Cat Program aims to move forward and be proactive to protect students and the cats on campus. If the cats are removed a vacuum effect will occur and other feral cats will move in, as well as those who are left by students, creating a more complex issue.
Let us create the highest of standards at SMU and truly be "World-Changers."

Re: SMU feral cat trapping??
We took in three feral kittens from SMU two years ago. They're now very nice house cats with excellent mousing skills. Though we occasionally are awakened at night with a live squirrel in the house.

No one worry. When you kill a cat it still has 8 more lives

I saw a pack of opossums eating out of the fondren cat feeder the other night and two of the cats were just watching. Those feeders don't just attract cats

There are several coyotes in the park cities. They could help with this problem also.
Less cats= good news.

Re: SMU feral cat trapping??
Funny you mention that. Not long ago, I was sitting on the front steps of the house chatting with my daughter before breakfast. A coyote comes ambling right down the center of Airline and proceeds to take a right turn right in front of us and heads up the street. Couple minutes later he comes back down the street and proceeds to Caruth Park. About sixty seconds later, animal control comes along in pursuit.

That would be cool, but a Ruger 10/22 would be more humane.Paladin wrote:Just send in the Dentist with crossbow from Minnesota...

Is this some kind of a publicity campaign for a new Midnight Louie mystery by Carol Nelson Douglas?
