Looks like no Phillips next yearhttp://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/colleges/smu/stories/112305dnsposmubrief.2a4499f.html
Phillips not even mentioned in the article. Im sure many of you are privately crying right now. I have to admit I am a little disappointed but thats the way things go.
Like it or not... That is the way that I see it.
OR, could it be an outright challenge for C. Phillips? Sat on the couch last summer. Came to school heavy... did not play while being number 3 then number two QB. In all news reports, the other QB's are talked about. If this does not make CP mad and get him motivated. NOTHING will. Lets see how this turns out. Does he want to work hard enough to earn the leadership spot? We have others, even though I think a lot of us would like to see a good CP on the field. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Not true. Worked out at night at his old high school because he was working two jobs. His ability as a quarterback is a matter of debate, I suppose, but he is not a lazy guy.
I wonder if he could play LB or SS. (And when he was recruited, didn't his HS coach say he also could play TE?) And sure, Helmet, there's always a chance Watkins made a mistake -- he's human like the rest of us. Maybe he just inadvertently ommitted Phillips' name?
As I mentioned in the "next year's expectations" thread, currently we have two redshirt frosh and a QB who hasn't taken a snap in two years and is coming off rotator cuff issues, which are very difficult to overcome. PB is NOT anti-CP. That is why he joked around about him during running with the stangs. That is why CP doesn't sulk on the sidelines. CP is NOT out of the picture. Nobody is "down" on CP. If I am PB and I have three inexperienced QBs and none of them are upperclassmen, I sure as hell am going to bring in a JUCO QB, to provide some maturity, game experience, and competition. PB has some good players coming back next year, and you don't want to lose momentum in the program because you have to play a RS Frosh QB.
This is a great move by PB, and is very, very important when looking at the team next year. I suspect only one will be brought in, but that one player is going to come in with higher accolades than Romo OR Eckert.
Unlikely it was a mistake. Watkins covered every one of Phillips' starts. Watkins has written about Phillips at least five times this year. Watkins knows who Phillips is and what position he plays. The only other scenario I could imagine is that Bennett is using Watkins to propogandize the competition for a starting job at SMU to entice a particular JuCo prospect to come here. But that would require Watkins to go along with that, and I find that unlikely, too. Watkins isn't Bennett's puppet.
hmmm...
I read it slightly differently. At first, I was shocked not to see CP's name, I decided, howeveve, that it was a blurb about going after JuCo QBs and not a blurb about who is starting next year. Pointing out that we have two red shirt frosh at position goes more to saying we need JuCo help then also including the facts that PB has CP itching to prove himself again and that PB and SMU are trying to get a medical redshirt for Tony Eckert. The fact that the article also failed to mention that they are trying to bring Eckert back really cinched it for me (that this was a piece of recruiting news only). But, that's just me. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
very strange. So if Romo gets hurt during Utep game, who plays? If its Chris Phillips, then his rotator cuff cant be too damaged. If its Phillips, how could he not be the leading candidate at this point for starter next year or at least freakin mentioned? If its not Phillips, who the hell is the backup right now? None of this makes any sense.
As for this article, maybe Bennett is trying to publicly encourage someone to transfer. Why else would you announce that you are going after a juco qb? Now you have to get one or else you look untrue to your word or that you blatantly failed to get one. And if you dont get a real good one, why would you want to waste a scholarship on one that isn't better than what you've got? Maybe Watkins just asked a question and sucked this out of Bennett, but its weird.
Watkins also wrote that Eckert was going to start the Marshall game. Mistakes happen. I'm not saying this is a mistake, just that they do happen.
To clarify, he was talking about Romo and the way he has been helping Eric Johnson and Justin Willis. You could say that there was no need to talk about Phillips in that context, but I doubt it was unintentional.
Best thing for the Program right now is for Bennett to get the K state job.
1) He has no traction in recruiting for this year, a new fresh name could help us get some 2) Phil hasn't shown the ability to develop the talent he has, hopefully someone else can 3) Phil doesn't but the young ones one field, we need someone who puts the best talent on the field.
