Mustangs Break Into NSCAA Coaches Poll At No. 23
SMU Enters Top 25 After 2-0 Weekend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (NSCAA/SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team has made its way into the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men’s National Poll at No. 23 this week.

SMU enters the Top 25 after receiving votes for the first time in 2015 last week and posting a 2-0 record. In 2014, the Mustangs occupied the No. 21 spot in the Oct. 14 poll and the No. 24 spot in the Oct. 21 poll.

The Mustangs defeated non-conference opponents Sacramento State and UIC last week, and are currently at No. 2 in the American Athletic Conference standings, behind Cincinnati. SMU leads the conference in assists (6), saves (9) and is tied for first with UCF in points (14).

Junior Stanton Garcia is tied for the lead in goals (2), while Jared Rice and Mauro Cichero are tied for first in assists (2). Redshirt sophomore Michael Nelson occupies the lead for saves (8) and also leads the conference in saves per game with a 4.00 average.

Garcia was named to the American Weekly Honors Honor Roll this week for his game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to break a 1-1 tie with UIC.

The Mustangs are back in action this week when they travel to Boston, Massachusetts for their first road trip of the season to face Boston College on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4:00 p.m. CT and Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.
