Things I liked about the Baylor game

Postby Sam I Am » Fri Sep 04, 2015 10:22 pm

Foremost I liked the blue jersey uniform. The first half offense was good too. The defense played a good second quarter. I would like to see better tackling and faster defensive secondary players. Better days are ahead.

Yes, and our play matched the greatness of the jerseys.

The offensive line was much better. They were protecting against one of the best defensive lines in college football and took it to them. Matt Davis was awesome. The running game was very good considering who we were playing. Our receivers (particularly Sutton) were very good. Our return team was very good. West nearly broke one back all the way and we didn't run back kicks that should have been TBs. Offense in general looked very good. Defensive backs were playing against one of, and perhaps, the best set of receivers in college football. They have big, tall, strong and fast receivers. The first two scores by Baylor were set up by receptions where defensive backs could not run with the receivers. The last three Baylor TDs were caused by plays where DBs should have made tackles and missed or could not recover from miscues or hits that didn't bring down the receivers. Most any other team would have not scored on those three plays. But Baylor receivers are so talented. DL was much better than last year. However, Baylor made most of their running yards from tackle to tackle. We need to recruit some DBs and DL/DBs. Tonight these were our weakest positions on the field. In summary, SMU played a great game, one much better than I thought we could play. During the third quarter the lack of SMU depth began to show it ugliness. However, with a few good plays SMU would have been in the game up to the end. Everyone should be very pleased with the effort and ability of the SMU team on this Baylor game.

One last thing: I was a little disappointed with TEMPO but I am sure that will improve over time.

I think they slowed it down vs Baylor. SMU had 37 mins of possession and I'm sure on purpose.

I can tell you from experience that will improve greatly as the season goes on. We had some growing pains with the up tempo stuff at first. About the third game against Auburn it kind of clicked and we finished with over 100 snaps from scrimmage and 624 yards of offense. RIght now the kids are still thinking about plays instead of just playing. It will get better.

We were probably no tempo against Baylor trying to take time off of the clock. The less Baylor
offense time the better.
May the forth be with us.

Thought coach confirmed this at the presser.

You saw a smidgen of the tempo on a 4th and less than one when not only did we go for it, but there was no decision time. It was an immediate rush to the line, quick snap and run for the 1st down. I think we will begin to see that more often.

Confirmed at the post game...and u do recall a very up tempo push in the first half, at least for a team in its first game after a very slow and controlled offense for years. HCCM quickly realized his offense was his best defense. That won't be necessary against UNT, JMU, and hopefully most of the AAC. Heck, even Temple will be forced to deal with an offensive line that actually blocks...more than I can say about that pathetic PSU unit they faced yesterday.
