If the overall engineering applicant pool is in excess of 70% men, then it would be statistically very difficult to have a great engineering school that was 50% women. Its just math. Engineers should get that. I have heard Lyles's percentage of women is the highest in the nation among engineering schools that are well respected.

Hopefully, we'll start using a lot of our future donations for scholarships in lieu of buildings. Besides, so many students are going online.

How many high-quality students are going online?

That trend should hit schools like Memphis before it hits us

Some SMU masters programs are going online, same with other top schools' niche programs. AZ State has a big undergrad online program, including the Starbucks baristas.

No consideration for gender balance. Notice that TCU is about 60% female but they don't have engineering do they?

23% peer and counselor reputation
18% grad rate
10% finl resources
8% class size
7% faculty compensation
13% acceptance rate, top 10% (big help at state schools) and test scores

TCU has an engineering program it is only about 15 years old though. Their nursing program probably contributes something to the female ratio.

When will women's studies reach gender parity?

I find the whole premise exist and insulting, although it could be an OK gimmick for SMU. SMU seems to be moving more and more toward training engineering managers and other non-day to day real engineers which is good - fits our demographics better.

The gender parity in engineering thing is a total gimmick, and although I think it is fantastic to encourage women to enter engineering disciplines, it very well might not be the best thing for an aspiring engineering school to do depending on what they are doing to attempt to even out the numbers.

SMU has been talking about it since 2002, originally saying they hoped to reach gender parity by 2007. Oops.

as someone in a mixed program (online and in-person) I think that it is a clear money grab by the universities and at least for my cohort we have struggled more in the online courses than the traditional brick & motor.

I can't imagine we drop. If anything we move up into the low 50's. I know the university put a huge emphasis on the 25% alumni giving in a calendar year which was accomplished. I think we'll wind up at #52.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Now apply that logic to Title IX. Not as many women as men want to be engineers. Not as many women as men want to play sports. So stop creating artificial, sexist quotas.

Why would any woman want to wear bib overalls, stuff a red bandana in their hip pocket, and ride in a diesel locomotive all day long ? Money ? Desire a trans gendered job ? I'm so confused

Its a boat race vs other really fast boats that are not standing still. Just because we have improved doesn't mean we will move forward.

I agree, it's an ongoing competition for which we are currently ranked #58.

Look at the schools ranked #40-#57. Given this state and this city's unquestioned prosperity as well as that of our own alumni, there is absolutely no reason we can't surpass over half these schools.

Ultimate goal should be somewhere between #30-#40, with our B-school the best in the SW.
