Two numebr 12's on offense

Postby Rebel10 » Sat Sep 05, 2015 12:06 am

I saw both Castille and Johnson on offense and both wore number 12. I only thought you could do that if one played on defense and the other player played on offense.

I saw Johnson go in on offense which surprised me. Did not notice Castille in the game at the same time, but if he was you are correct.

They were not in the game at the same time but I thought you could only have one player with the same number on offense and on defense regardless of if they are in the game at the same time or not.

They just cannot be on the field at the same time from what I understand.

Correct.

Teams usually don't do that to avoid the inevitable confusion of ending up with both in the game at the same time though.

According to our football website, we have lots of duplicate numbers on the roster:

Yes Ponysnob, I know there are duplicate numbers but you usually when that happens one player is on defense and the other is on offense. I have never seen a situation where both players with the same number were on offense (hence the title). But I know now that they just can't be on the field at the same time.

I was really just pointing out how many duplicate numbers we have on our roster.

It was very surprising to see the "defensive" 12 enter in offense.

It's a very obscure rule. Apparently, two players on offense/defense can have the same number as long as they don't play at the same time or play the same position... this came up this past weekend in the Ole Miss game where freshman Damarkus Lodge had played receiver wearing the #5 but DT Robert Nkemdiche (wears #5) had also caught a pass from the fullback position. Someone looked into it and found that the rule is apparently that you can have duplicate numbers as long as the players with duplicate numbers don't play the same position and, obviously, aren't on the field at the same time.

It seems to me that we have an abnormally high number of key players who share the same number. For example, I understand how P Line shares a number with a RS-FR who is unlikely to play much. I don't understand how Castille and Johnson share the same number. Castille, or some other WR, could have had 84 all to himself.

Thanks Reb. On that note I thought they had Castille and Johnson playing wr, but Johnson could have come in as an H Back so that he would not be playing the position as Castille even though they were not in the game at the same time.
