Watching us WHIP the Miners

Postby The Q » Sun Nov 27, 2005 1:23 am

It looked like there were about 40 guys on the sideline before the game. So I made a point to walk through the section where they were sitting, to see if I could read their nametags. I couldn't get a lot of them without being too conspicuous, but here's what I saw:

M-someone Mitchell -- rivals has only one guy with that name from the area, and he's from Dallas (South Oak Cliff), so I assume that's who it was. Rivals lists him as an athlete (6-1, 180), and the only school mentioned is UTEP -- which he visited in November and has offered him.

Aaron Sims -- rivals has him listed as a safety/running back from Denton High. Sims (6-2, 195, 4.45, 310 bench, 460 squat, two stars, Rivals 5.3) has committed to UTEP, and also has an offer from Louisiana-Monroe. He also considered Indiana, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and TCU. He said (on rivals) "I like playing safety because it's like you're the quarterback of the defense. You get to be the leader back there and you get to hit people."

Jon Miller -- the only one I found on-line was the offensive lineman from Tyler. If that's who I saw, he sure was impressive. The Tyler JUCO website says he's 6-3, 290. No idea how good he is, or what his interest level is.

Someone named "Deal" or "Beal" -- I guess maybe it's Jeremy Beal -- the DE from Carrollton Creekview who is rising fast, according to rivals. They list him at 6-2, 243, 4.7, 305 bench, 21 bench reps (how much?), 450 squat, 4.75 shuttle, 3.278 GPA. They also said he has visited Alabama (offer), and has offers from us, Central Michigan, Wyoming and Duke.

There also was a lineman there whose nametag I couldn't read, but he was enormous. Probably 6-3 or 6-4 (if not taller) and well over 300. But he wasn't fat -- just big. Very big.

Alvin Nnabuife's younger brother, Bryant, sat behind me at every home game this season. He currently attends Elkins High School in Houston. He's considering SMU.

What position does Bryant play?
Anyone have any numbers on him? You've got to think that watching his big brother get a pick in the last two games can't hurt!

Wait .... Google is a wonderful thing.

Bryant Nnabuife is a defensive back listed (by rivals) at 6-0.5, 180, 4.12 (shuttle), 6 (bench reps). Didn't see a 40 time or a max bench or squat.

There was another guy there who would have swept BUS off his feet. I don't know who he was, but he was absolutely massive - I'd guess 6'4" and 320 or 330. Maybe it was the Miller guy you (Q) listed, but he looked a lot bigger than 290.

I heard about another guy who was supposed to be there yesterday, a JUCO defensive back named Blake Beltel (or something like that). Anyone know if he was there? Or where he's from? How big/fast?

the Michael Mitchell kid from South Oak Cliff (6-2, 200) committed to UTEP about 10 days ago, but his coach indicated he may still be in play for SMU and Colorado St. He played all over the field for UTEP but his coach thinks most intend to beef him up to play a LB or perhaps a Strong Safety position.

another possible visitor to SMU based on second hand sources may have been OLM Mark Terry(6-5, 325 5.2(unverified) 375 Bench Press(unverified) from Irving Nimitz. He possibly is one of the huge guys a few posters reported seeing. No stories on him but he is in the Rivals Database with no listed perferences.

I saw Jon Miller on the field after the game talking to Bennett, I'm 6'5" I think he was at least 6' 2" and impressively put together, wide and broad, BUS would have wept with joy.

I'd like to see as many 6'5" 325 guys as we can get on the team. Three lines worth could have made the A&M game much more entertaining.
