Sorry, but that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on PFs. Austin is definitely not a southern city. Patterson was fired because the guy cannot get along with anyone. He burned bridges weekly in Austin and it finally caught up with him. My guess is his firing had nothing to do with his hirings, or the race of the people he hired.
Do you remember the firestorm that hit mostly by Red McCombs and some big boosters when Strong was hired? And then the rumblings after Smart was hired? And Yes, Texas is still considered a southern state. Patterson was not strategic in his hirings and gave them the rope to hang him in other areas of business.

That would probably help football get a lot more leeway with professors as well, win win. Aslo Smart has a seven year $21MM contract, not that UT couldn't cover it. But if this change to a new AD helps push uncertainty in the minds of future recruits and some of them go to SMU instead, especially in basketball where we can compete more for top talent at the moment so be it. Prediction: UT continues to mismanage, implodes, sees how much money A&M is starting to make, blames lack of revenue in the Big 12, agrees to ESPN for a buyout of its failed network, leaves and joins the Big 10.

I think Strong's contract is similar to Smart's. But Strong is gone barring a Big 12 championship imo. Will Gruden be the next UT coach?

Of course Orsini was fired by protestant evangelical Turner for his Italian Catholicism and familial ties to The papacy and then hiring Jewish Brown.

Sure I remember the ramblings of an old man's thoughts on the hiring of Charlie Strong. I don't remember any other big time donors complaining about it though. I'd love to see proof of that if true. I don't know how familiar you are with Austin but it is one of the most progressive, liberal cities in the country. There's nothing "southern" about it.

What if UT goes 11-1 and makes the playoff now?

I agree. Being an AD is about politics just as much as it is about dollars and cents. As much as I despise Deloss, he straddled that fence better than just about any AD I've ever seen. Which is no easy task considering the number of huge egos and the intensity of the politics in the UT atheletics scene. Patterson completely failed at the politics piece. In fact, it was like he didn't even care about it. . .which won't cut it anywhere, least of all at UT.

Seriously, none of those who read this thread can get that time back!
Pretty sure there is a laundry list of reasons Patterson has been fired.
Will Strong go? Possibly...because he doesn't seem to be a good coach or up to the level expected. Was he hired as a statement? Maybe... Would that matter if he won? No!
Was Smart hired as a statement? No. Smart is one of the higher regarded coaches from smaller schools in the country.
Patterson was a dumpster fire who alienated everyone he came in contact with. He was such a toxic mess, he could screw up a wet dream. So no...let's leave the "everyone is a racist" crap for somewhere else. The big money sport wasn't winning and the basketball team was back-sliding into a deeper level of mediocrity (not that the boosters really even care about basketball that much).
And Gruden for coach? You are absolutely insane now.

Man, Rebel you just won the prize for posting the stupidest thing on PF in history, which is saying a lot.
UT is obsessed with winning - period. If the coaches are purple and green they wouldn't care, as long as they are winning. You have no earthly idea what you are talking about, and just because that might be how they act in Mississippi that does not translate in the least in Austin. Quite the opposite.

the firing had nothing to with his hirings or the performance of the football team. It's as simple as that. Patterson is quite simply the most arrogant person in Texas and it caught up with him.

Who is the next UT coach? Herman, Gruden (who Red McCombs wants) or Morris?

If they are smart - they go after Patterson with many, many truckloads of cash.

I said barring a Big 12 Championship he is gone. I think going 11-1 would be a Big 12 Championship. Maybe he stays if he gets close. We'll see.

Strong is not getting fired this year. UT hired him to clean up a mess He has dismantled much of the team for a total rebuild 6 Starting Freshman 23 Freshman (True and Redshirt) in 2 deep A mess like that takes 3+ years to fix
