It should just be a shorter agreement (like Hoop said). Four years tops.

I just view the UNT series as far more meaningful for them. Sure we get a decent uptick in fans every other year, but that can be accomplished with other teams. It was clear by the thousands of "SMwho" t-shirts walking around campus that they have an unbelievable inferiority complex dripping with pure unadulterated hate and jealousy. A true rivalry is one of two peers battling to be the better school; UNT is a school looking to discredit the better school with hopes of finding relevance. Not a good situation for SMU.

There is ZERO incentive for SMU is in this series. Why give NTSU a platform to elevate their program when we are in the same region? SMU-TCU is a historic rivalry game. SMU-NTSU is not. We gain extremely little from playing them other than getting 7,000 of their 225,000 DFW alumni in Ford Stadium every other year. I agree. The SM-Who shirt with the eagle stepping on a dead horse and the plane flyover was proof that they care way, way, way more about this game than we do. Drop them. Relegate them to their deserved third tier status in DFW and leave them for dead in CUSA. This game is a huge windfall for them. For us it does absolutely nothing.

I don't want incoming students or unaffiliated persons to see a long series and mistake out for a rivalry diminishing us and elevating them

If we end up cancelling the contract in a few years I'll buy you a drink. And unlike FTHP, I'll actually be good on my offer.

I don't see why we would cancel this. Sure, no one likes UNT and the fact they wanted to hire a plane to fly a banner (which I never saw) is hilarious. But it's a close game travel wise and they do bring fans. I like the Texas State game too. Honestly, since we play so many out of state conference games, our OOC should be stacked with Texas teams. Do TCU, another Big 12, and then UNT or Texas State or something. Also, as UH just announced they won't play FCS programs, we should do the same. We don't have one on our schedule now so that's not a difficult announcement to make.

And I'll buy you drink if we are still playing UNT in 2018. I don't dislike UNT, I'm just kind of indifferent towards them. I don't buy your reasons for playing them but we all have different opinions. As for our current schedule, we do play a FCS school this season, JMU.

Get a MAC, MWC or Sunbelt team to play. No reason to continue the UNT series when we get a chance to cancel.

they brought a lot this time because they thought they could win. It will be half as many next time.

Agree with most of the above. We can do better with this valuable slot. We need to try to position for next alignment, and I think that means beefing up our schedule with lower level P-5's so they can all see the advantage of adding Dallas and SMU to their away games. Beating up on UNT is not going to do anything for us, particularly if we can build up our own fan base which feels like it is underway.

Deal. And sorry, I was looking at our future schedules. Good catch.

I just don't know who we would change them too. UNT is beatable every year. We are dominating the series. We're playing Arkansas State coming up in 2017 and 2019. I would rather us play UNT than that game. We should be playing TCU every year, and then another Big 12 team as we actually have a history with them. After that, we should do two very winnable games.

Why? They are 40 mins away and we get a chance to establish a little brother rivalry with them. Beat them the next 8 games. If we are in P5 by the time the series ends, change it to a yearly affair at Ford and make them our FCS game.

I'd rather play a body bag road game at a big time P5 program than play a home game against NTSU. There is absolutely zero incentive to this series for SMU aside from a small uptick in attendance when NTSU comes to Ford and low travel costs for the trip to Denton. Scrap it. Dump them. Let them rot in CUSA.

Couple points. Even before they went Big 12, you didn't see TCU playing NTSU and you sure didn't see them going to Denton to play. If NTSU really wants shots at us, make them play at Ford every time they want to tee it up. Forget going to that Safeway parking lot up in Denton, that's dumb.
As far as next year, as of now we have to find a home game for 9/17/2016, otherwise we will open with 3 straight on the road. So, you might see an FBS again next year in that slot. I see no reason to say you won't play FBS. Its arrogant, like the P5 saying they won't play us. Don't say anything, just do what you need to do strategically. I could see us moving or cancelling NTSU next year to find a home game for our opener.

Surely Morris is in favor of getting someone besides NTSU on the schedule.

Is everyone just against the series because their fans are annoying and they take the game way too seriously? I will never get the argument "it does nothing for us." What does playing Arkansas State do for us that UNT doesn't? People who say "schedule a MAC or sunbelt team instead" do realize we are just trading out one for the other right? At least our fans can travel to this game. There is no way I am going up to Arkansas State. Are you guys suggesting we play TCU, Baylor, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma every year in non-conference?

Don't get me wrong, I hate Denton and driving up I-35. And yeah, I didn't really see the merits of a 10 year series. I would have preferred some flexibility. But I don't see why this is the worst series we ever could have signed.
